Steven Hitchcock is the closest thing on our list to the Anderson & Sheppard drape delivered by a single cutter. His father, John Hitchcock, joined Anderson & Sheppard in the early 1960s, held the Royal Warrant to the then Prince of Wales from 1989 and became managing director in 2003. Steven joined in September 1990, taking over the board just vacated by a young Alexander McQueen, according to Woolmark, and spent five years learning coatmaking and four cutting before setting up alone in 1999.
The cut follows the soft drape he learned there. Armholes are high and small, so the coat anchors at the neck; the shoulder is lightly wadded rather than padded, the sleeve head is flat, and the sleeve is cut about three inches larger than the armhole, against the usual one, for ease of movement. Inside, a single English canvas and a little horsehair are stitched loosely by hand, and a side-body panel, rather than a fish dart, shapes the waist. He measures, cuts and fits every order himself.
Prices are published: a two-piece suit from $8,300 and a jacket from $6,500, both before VAT, with half paid as a deposit. With VAT, the suit comes to about $10,000, level with Richard Anderson. His published client list is short but notable: he has made overcoats for King Charles III since 2001 and a lightweight suit the King wore at the 2024 Royal Windsor Horse Show.
Know how he works before you book. There is no shop: after leaving Chiltern Street in Marylebone, he now fits clients in a private workroom in Fitzrovia, strictly by appointment, and he closes his order book each year once it is full. For the patient client who wants the drape from the man who cuts it, there is no closer match.

Questions
Where is Steven Hitchcock based?
He fits clients in a private workroom in Fitzrovia, central London, strictly by appointment; the address is given when you book. He previously worked from St George Street in Mayfair and, from 2019, 58 Chiltern Street in Marylebone.
Can I visit Steven Hitchcock without an appointment?
No. He works strictly by appointment, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Book by phone on +44 20 7287 2492 or by email.
How much does a Steven Hitchcock suit cost?
A two-piece suit starts at $8,300 before VAT, a jacket at $6,500, an overcoat at $8,300 and a dinner suit at $11,400. Half the total is due as a deposit.
Does Steven Hitchcock travel to the United States?
Yes. He holds fittings in New York and Washington, D.C. several times a year.
How does his cut differ from Anderson & Sheppard's?
It comes from the same soft drape, with high armholes and a light canvas. Permanent Style has found it a little more restrained, with a full chest but without the drapey folds sometimes seen at Anderson & Sheppard. The main difference is that Hitchcock measures, cuts and fits every order himself.
