Anderson & Sheppard

Old Burlington Street, Mayfair · Since 1906

Anderson & Sheppard is the reference for the English drape: a soft, natural shoulder, a small, high armhole and fullness through the chest and back, so the jacket moves with the wearer. Per Anderson, a Swedish tailor trained by Frederick Scholte, founded the firm at 13 Savile Row in 1906 with trouser cutter Sydney Sheppard. Fred Astaire, Gary Cooper and Cole Porter were early clients. It has worked from 32 Old Burlington Street since 2005, holds a Royal Warrant from King Charles III and is led by proprietor Anda Rowland, with Danny Hall as head cutter. A two-piece suit costs about $9,100 (2025 figure). It suits a first bespoke commission and anyone who puts comfort ahead of a sharp, built-up line.

  • The leading exponent of the English drape cut
  • Royal Warrant from King Charles III; a certified B Corporation
  • Clients have included Fred Astaire, Gary Cooper and Cole Porter
  • Ready-made Haberdashery at 17 Clifford Street since 2012

Henry Poole & Co

Savile Row, Mayfair · Since 1806

Often called the founder of Savile Row, Henry Poole & Co has been run by the Cundey family since 1876. James Poole set up in London in 1806 and turned to military tailoring during the Napoleonic Wars; his son Henry gave the business its main entrance on Savile Row in 1846. In 1865 Henry Poole made a short evening coat for the Prince of Wales, which the firm's archives record as the first dinner suit. The cut is structured but moderate, with less shoulder than Huntsman and less drape than Anderson & Sheppard. Simon Cundey, the seventh generation, is managing director, and the firm marks its 220th anniversary in 2026. A two-piece suit costs about $8,600 (2025 figure). It suits clients who want a classic suit or dinner suit.

  • Its archives record the first dinner suit, made for the Prince of Wales in 1865
  • Royal Warrant holder since Queen Victoria's warrant of 1869
  • Family-run since 1876; Simon Cundey is the seventh generation
  • Marks its 220th anniversary in 2026

Huntsman

Savile Row, Mayfair · Since 1849

Huntsman makes the most structured jacket on our list: a strong shoulder, high armholes, a suppressed waist and a single button, a line taken from the riding coat. Henry Huntsman bought a gaiter and breeches maker in 1849; the firm became leather breeches maker to the Prince of Wales in 1886 and moved to 11 Savile Row in 1919. Head cutter Colin Hammick refined the one-button cut in the 1960s, and Gregory Peck was a client for 50 years. Owned by Pierre Lagrange since 2013 and run by managing director Taj Phull, it also has a New York atelier on West 57th Street. A two-piece suit starts at $9,900 and takes 14 to 16 weeks. It suits clients who want a defined, formal shape.

  • The one-button cut, refined by head cutter Colin Hammick in the 1960s
  • Leather breeches maker by royal warrant to the Prince of Wales from 1886
  • Gregory Peck was a client from 1953 to 2003
  • New York atelier on West 57th Street since 2016

Dege & Skinner

Savile Row, Mayfair · Since 1865

Dege & Skinner is the Savile Row tailor most closely tied to uniforms and ceremonial dress. Jacob Dege, a German-born tailor, founded the firm in Mayfair in 1865, and the Skinner family has owned it since 1947: Michael Skinner is chairman and his son William, the fifth generation of the family to become a master tailor, is managing director. It made Prince Harry's Blues and Royals frock coat for his 2018 wedding and Prince Louis's uniform for the 2023 Coronation, and holds a Royal Warrant from King Charles III. Its civilian cut is structured and military-influenced, and since 1994 it has run the Row's only permanent in-house bespoke shirt service. It suits clients who want formal, traditional English tailoring and shirts under one roof.

  • Royal warrants from the British Crown, the Sultan of Oman and the King of Bahrain
  • Made Prince Harry's 2018 wedding frock coat and Prince Louis's 2023 Coronation uniform
  • Savile Row's first permanent bespoke shirt service, launched in 1994

Richard Anderson

Savile Row, Mayfair · Since 2001

Richard Anderson is a small, owner-run firm where the founder still cuts every bespoke pattern. Anderson joined Huntsman as a 17-year-old apprentice in 1982 and rose to head cutter; in 2001 he and Huntsman's former managing director, Brian Lishak, opened at 13 Savile Row, where the firm marked its 25th anniversary in 2026. The cut descends from the riding coat and the 19th-century Thornton system: one button at the natural waist, high armholes, a neat structured shoulder without a roped sleeve head, and pockets and vents set a little high. It makes bespoke for men and women, exports about half its work, mainly to the US, and opened the RICH's ready-to-wear shop downstairs in 2025. It suits clients who want the Huntsman lineage from a smaller firm.

  • Founded by Huntsman's former head cutter and managing director
  • Every bespoke pattern cut by Richard Anderson himself
  • One-button cut from the 19th-century Thornton system
  • Bespoke for men and women, plus the RICH's ready-to-wear shop

Edward Sexton

Savile Row, Mayfair · Since 1969 (as Nutters of Savile Row)

Edward Sexton is the Savile Row name for tailoring with swagger. Sexton, a cutter from Dagenham, opened Nutters of Savile Row with Tommy Nutter on Valentine's Day 1969; three of the four Beatles wore its suits on the cover of Abbey Road, and Bianca Jagger wore its tailoring at her 1971 wedding. The cut is unmistakable: roped shoulders, long, low peak lapels, a defined chest, a nipped waist and high armholes. Sexton died in July 2023, aged 80. The business continues at 35 Savile Row under creative director Dominic Sebag-Montefiore, and its bespoke suits, from $8,700, are still made by hand on the Row. It suits clients who want a suit with presence rather than restraint.

  • Co-founded Nutters of Savile Row on 14 February 1969
  • Three of the Beatles wore its suits on the Abbey Road cover
  • Clients have included Mick and Bianca Jagger, Twiggy and Harry Styles
  • Four tiers, from Savile Row bespoke to ready-to-wear

Norton & Sons

Savile Row, Mayfair · Since 1821

Norton & Sons is one of the oldest firms on Savile Row and one of the few that publishes its bespoke prices. Walter Norton founded it on the Strand in 1821, and it moved to Mayfair in the 1860s; past clients include King Edward VII, a young Winston Churchill and Lord Carnarvon, who wore a Norton suit when he opened Tutankhamun's tomb. Designer Patrick Grant revived the firm from 2005, and in 2023 James Sleater, owner of Cad & the Dandy, took a majority stake and became director. The cut pairs a softer shoulder with a close chest, a nipped waist and a high armhole. Bespoke suits start at $8,700 including VAT, with 12 to 15 weeks to delivery. It suits buyers who want classic English tailoring and a clear price.

  • Bespoke suits from $8,700 including VAT, published on its website
  • Bespoke shirts from $480, with no minimum order
  • Historic royal warrants to four successive British monarchs
  • Women's made-to-measure since 2024, alongside women's bespoke

Steven Hitchcock

Fitzrovia, by appointment · Since 1999

Steven Hitchcock offers the Anderson & Sheppard drape without the scale of a large firm. The son of John Hitchcock, who spent more than 50 years at Anderson & Sheppard and became its managing director, he joined that firm in 1990, learned coatmaking and then cutting, and set up alone in 1999. He measures every client, cuts every pattern himself and limits output to about 135 suits a year. The cut is soft and draped: high armholes, a light canvas, a flat sleeve head and a side-body panel to shape the waist. King Charles III is a client. He now fits clients privately in Fitzrovia, strictly by appointment, and visits New York and Washington several times a year. It suits the patient client who wants one cutter's attention.

  • Trained at Anderson & Sheppard from 1990, under his father, John
  • Cuts every pattern himself; output limited to about 135 suits a year
  • Two-piece suits from $8,300 before VAT, published on his website
  • Has made overcoats and a suit for King Charles III

Thom Sweeney

Old Burlington Street, Mayfair · Since 2007

Thom Sweeney is the youngest name on our list and the one most at ease with modern menswear. Thom Whiddett, a bespoke cutter, and Luke Sweeney, a made-to-measure specialist, met at Timothy Everest and opened in 2007 in a small room on Stratford Place. Since 2020 they have worked from a four-story townhouse at 24c Old Burlington Street, which expanded into No. 25 in 2025. The cut pairs an English silhouette with Italian softness: lightweight chest canvases, fine shoulder pads and a leaner line than the older Savile Row firms. Bespoke is made on site in eight to ten weeks over about three fittings. It suits the client who wants a sharp, contemporary suit, with made-to-measure and ready-to-wear under the same roof.

  • Bespoke in 8 to 10 weeks, with about three fittings and 80 hours of hand work
  • Bespoke made in the workrooms of the Old Burlington Street townhouse
  • Made-to-measure and ready-to-wear from about $2,600 (2025)
  • Stores in London, New York, Los Angeles and Miami

Gieves & Hawkes

Savile Row, Mayfair · Since 1771 (Hawkes); Gieves from 1785

Gieves & Hawkes joins two military tailors: Hawkes, opened by Thomas Hawkes in 1771, and Gieves, a Royal Navy outfitter from 1785. Between them they dressed the Duke of Wellington and Lord Nelson. Hawkes has been at No. 1 Savile Row since 1913, and Gieves merged with Hawkes in 1974. The bespoke cut keeps a military line, with high armholes and a roped shoulder, and is still made in-house. Frasers Group has owned the business since 2022, after the collapse of its previous parent, and reopened the refurbished flagship in 2026. Bespoke, made-to-measure, ready-to-wear and military dress share the building. Bespoke starts at about $6,600 (2025 figure). It suits clients who want military heritage and a choice of service.

  • Royal warrants held continuously since 1789, according to the firm
  • Early clients included the Duke of Wellington and Lord Nelson
  • Bespoke cut and made in-house at No. 1 Savile Row, reopened in 2026
  • Bespoke, made-to-measure, ready-to-wear and military in one building

How we rank

We judge every tailor on four things: the cut and construction, the fit and the fittings, the service, and its reputation over time. We draw on each tailor's history and published reviews, and our critics visit as clients, commissioning and wearing the work themselves. We update each list once a year.

The arithmetic

How a score is built

A tailor that scores 9 for cut, 8 for fit, 9 for reputation and 7 for service earns 84 out of 100. Scores decide the order within each city; they are not compared across cities, because a Savile Row suit and a Dubai suit answer different needs and budgets. Every tailor in London is scored the same way.

  • Fit and fittings × 30%8 / 10

Bespoke in London: your questions

How much does a bespoke suit cost in London?

At these ten tailors, a two-piece bespoke suit starts at about $6,600 to $9,900. Huntsman's published starting price is $9,900, while Norton & Sons and Edward Sexton both publish $8,700 including VAT. The fabric and customizations you choose change the final price.

How long does a bespoke suit take in London?

Allow about three months. Huntsman quotes 14 to 16 weeks, Norton & Sons 12 to 15 weeks and Thom Sweeney 8 to 10 weeks, depending on fittings.

Which London tailor is best for a first bespoke suit?

Anderson & Sheppard. Its soft, draped cut suits most builds, is comfortable from the first wear and does not date, which makes it the safest first commission on our list.

What is the difference between bespoke and made-to-measure?

Bespoke starts from a paper pattern cut for you alone and is shaped over several fittings. Made-to-measure adjusts an existing pattern to your measurements, so it is quicker and cheaper but less personal.

Which of these tailors are on Savile Row?

Seven of our ten are on Savile Row itself: Henry Poole, Huntsman, Dege & Skinner, Richard Anderson, Edward Sexton, Norton & Sons and Gieves & Hawkes. Anderson & Sheppard and Thom Sweeney are one street away on Old Burlington Street, and Steven Hitchcock sees clients by appointment in Fitzrovia.

Do I need an appointment?

It is best to book a first appointment. Steven Hitchcock works strictly by appointment, while Anderson & Sheppard says no appointment is needed at its London shop.
