Leonard Logsdail

East 53rd Street, Midtown · Since 1991

Leonard Logsdail is a London-trained cutter who still measures, drafts the pattern and cuts each bespoke suit himself. Born in London in 1950, he worked for Savile Row firms including Bernard Weatherill, opened his own business on Carnaby Street in 1971 and moved it to 9 East 53rd Street in 1991. His cut has a slightly extended shoulder and some drape through the chest, but fits more closely than Anderson & Sheppard. Film work followed from 2006, with suits for Robert De Niro in The Good Shepherd, Denzel Washington in American Gangster and the cast of The Wolf of Wall Street. His son, Leonard Jr., joined him in 2012. Prices are not published. It suits clients who want English bespoke without leaving Manhattan.

  • Opened in London in 1971; at 9 East 53rd Street since 1991
  • More than 30 film and television credits, including The Wolf of Wall Street

Huntsman New York

West 57th Street, Midtown · Since 1849

Huntsman New York brings Savile Row's most structured cut to West 57th Street, with a Huntsman cutter based in the city. Henry Huntsman bought a London gaiter and breeches maker in 1849, and the firm's single-button jacket, with a strong shoulder, high armholes and a suppressed waist, descends from the riding coat. Huntsman opened an appointment-only space at 130 West 57th Street in February 2016 and in 2017 moved to a larger atelier in the same building, where patterns are cut on site. President Ed Turco and senior cutter Thomas Pierre Carr, formerly of the London cutting team, run it. No US-dollar price is published; in London a two-piece starts at $9,900. It suits clients who want a defined, formal English line without flying to London.

  • Resident Savile Row cutter in New York since 2017
  • At least three fittings and up to 80 hours of handwork per garment
  • The one-button cut refined by head cutter Colin Hammick in the 1960s
  • Bespoke for women, in a service designed and led by women

Paolo Martorano

West 57th Street, Midtown · Since 2017

Paolo Martorano has built one of New York's most closely watched bespoke businesses in less than a decade. From a family of tailors, he interned with Alan Flusser as a teenager, spent seven years in custom clothing at Paul Stuart and ran Dunhill's bespoke and made-to-measure service in North America before opening on his own in 2017, at 25. He is not a cutter himself: a dedicated cutter, who spent most of his career with Raphael Raffaelli, and coatmakers make each suit from a paper pattern over basted fittings. He calls the style New York Refined: a soft, lightly padded, sloped shoulder, a close back and high-rise trousers. Suits start at $7,500 (2023 figure). It suits clients who value service and a quiet, classic cut.

  • Bespoke suits from $7,500 and jackets from $5,200 (2023 figures)
  • Trained at Paul Stuart under Mark Rykken, then at Dunhill
  • Suits cut by a cutter who spent most of his career with Raphael Raffaelli
  • Clients include the actors Brian Cox and George Hamilton

J. Mueser

Christopher Street, West Village · Since 2008

J. Mueser brought soft, Neapolitan-style tailoring to the West Village and became one of the most influential names in younger American menswear. Jake Mueser, who studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology, founded the brand in 2008 and has run a two-story shop at 19 Christopher Street since 2010. The look is a soft shoulder, wide lapels with plenty of belly, patch pockets and little structure. There are three levels of make: ready-to-wear and made-to-order; the Waverly, hand-made in Naples from a hand-drafted paper pattern; and the Mayfair, a bespoke suit bench-made in New York, from $4,950 (2025 figure). It suits men who want relaxed tailoring with character, from a shop open seven days a week.

  • Mayfair bespoke: bench-made in New York from a hand-drafted pattern, from $4,950 (2025)
  • Waverly: hand-cut and sewn in Naples from a paper pattern kept on file

Martin Greenfield Clothiers

Varet Street, East Williamsburg, Brooklyn · Since 1977

Martin Greenfield Clothiers is a Brooklyn factory where private clients are fitted in the same building in which their suits are made by hand. Martin Greenfield, a Holocaust survivor, started there as a floor boy in 1947 and bought the business in 1977. He dressed presidents from Eisenhower to Obama, and the firm made more than 600 suits for HBO's Boardwalk Empire. He died in March 2024, aged 95; his sons, Jay and Tod Greenfield, run the company, which calls itself the last union men's clothing maker in New York City. Custom suits are cut from an individual pattern with a full canvas and are ready in about six weeks, after one fitting. Prices are not published. Alan Flusser Custom

East 48th Street, Midtown · Since 1986

Alan Flusser Custom is the shop of the writer who did most to codify classic American men's dress, and its suits follow his books: an updated drape with a soft, natural shoulder, a fuller chest and a trim waist. Flusser, author of Dressing the Man and designer of Gordon Gekko's wardrobe in Wall Street, opened his custom shop in 1986. It has worked from a third-floor showroom at 3 East 48th Street since the 2000s and has been owned since 2020 by Jonathan Sigmon, his former director. Patterns are adjusted from house blocks rather than drafted from scratch, with two fittings. The top Heritage make, sewn by hand in New York, starts at $4,600 for a suit. It suits admirers of 1930s-rooted American style.

  • Heritage suits made by hand in New York, from $4,600
  • Updated drape: soft natural shoulder, fuller chest, trim waist

Cad & The Dandy

West 57th Street, Midtown · Since 2008

Cad & The Dandy brings Savile Row bespoke to West 57th Street at a lower price than most of its rivals. James Sleater and Ian Meiers founded the firm in London in 2008 and built it into what it calls the largest bespoke tailor on Savile Row; in 2023 Sleater also took a majority stake in Norton & Sons. Its New York bespoke penthouse opened in 2018, and a street-level ready-to-wear shop with a workshop followed in late 2024. The cut pairs lighter shoulder padding with a more pronounced waist. Every new suit starts with a toile fitting, and collection is usually about 10 weeks after the first meeting. A two-piece starts at about $2,500 in New York (2026 figure). It suits a first bespoke suit or a wedding commission.

  • New York bespoke penthouse since 2018; a ready-to-wear shop below since 2024
  • Every new suit begins with a toile fitting
  • About 10 weeks from the first meeting to collection
  • One of the few US tailors specializing in morning suits and white tie

The Armoury

Duane Street, Tribeca · Since 2010

The Armoury is a menswear shop rather than a tailor, though Permanent Style calls its tailoring range excellent. Mark Cho and Alan See founded it in Hong Kong in 2010, and it soft-opened at 168 Duane Street in Tribeca in December 2013; a second shop, now at 13 East 69th Street, began as a Madison Avenue pop-up in 2020. Its own tailoring is made by Ring Jacket of Osaka and, in the higher Hundred Series, in Italy, in numbered models from padded to unstructured. Made-to-measure suits started at $3,150 in 2024, and visiting artisans such as Liverano & Liverano take bespoke orders at trunk shows. It suits buyers who want a soft, considered cut without a full bespoke commission.

  • Own-label tailoring by Ring Jacket of Osaka, founded in 1954

Michael Andrews Bespoke

Great Jones Alley, NoHo · Since 2006

Michael Andrews Bespoke is built around service and choice rather than a signature cut: a library of more than 30,000 suiting fabrics, stylists who guide each client, and a design the client leads. Michael Andrews, an engineer by training and a former King & Spalding lawyer, founded the firm in 2006. It marks 20 years in 2026 with two Manhattan studios, the original in Great Jones Alley, NoHo, and a newer one on East 53rd Street. For bespoke, a pattern is drafted for the client and tested in a muslin before cutting. Full bespoke suits start at $2,995 and made-to-measure at $995, with 10 to 12 weeks for a first bespoke order. It suits professionals who want a personal pattern and a broad wardrobe at a published price.

  • Full bespoke suits from $2,995; made-to-measure from $995
  • More than 30,000 suiting fabrics, from mills including Loro Piana, Holland & Sherry and Dormeuil

How we rank

We judge every tailor on four things: the cut and construction, the fit and the fittings, the service, and its reputation over time. We draw on each tailor's history and published reviews, and our critics visit as clients, commissioning and wearing the work themselves. We update each list once a year.

How a score is built

A tailor that scores 9 for cut, 8 for fit, 9 for reputation and 7 for service earns 84 out of 100. Scores decide the order within each city; they are not compared across cities, because a Savile Row suit and a Dubai suit answer different needs and budgets. Every tailor in New York is scored the same way.

Bespoke in New York: your questions

How much does a bespoke suit cost in New York?

Among our ten, starting prices for a two-piece suit run from about $2,500 at Cad & The Dandy to $7,500 at Paolo Martorano (2023 figure). Leonard Logsdail and Huntsman do not publish US prices; in London, Huntsman charges $9,900. New York City sales tax of 8.875% is added, and the fabric and customizations you choose change the final price.

How long does a bespoke suit take in New York?

Allow two to four months. Cad & The Dandy quotes about 10 weeks, Leonard Logsdail tells new clients to expect at least three months, and Tiefenbrun quoted three to four months in 2019. Made-to-measure is quicker, often four to eight weeks.

Is there sales tax on a custom suit in New York City?

Yes. Clothing priced at $110 or more per item is taxed at the full combined New York City rate of 8.875%: 4% state, 4.5% city and 0.375% for the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District. Items under $110 are exempt, which does not help with a suit. Ask whether a quoted price includes tax.

What is the difference between bespoke and made-to-measure?

Bespoke starts from a paper pattern cut for you alone and is shaped over several fittings, with much of the work done by hand. Made-to-measure adjusts an existing pattern, and in New York it is often made abroad: The Armoury's Ring Jacket suits are made in Japan, and Leonard Logsdail's made-to-measure in Canada. Because the terms are used loosely in New York, ask how the chest and lapels are made and where the suit is sewn.

Can I have a Savile Row suit made in New York?

Yes. Huntsman has had an atelier at 130 West 57th Street since 2016, with a resident cutter since 2017, and Cad & The Dandy opened a penthouse in the same building in 2018. Norton & Sons also has a showroom there, and Thom Sweeney's SoHo shop holds bespoke trunk shows. The suits are generally made in Britain.

Where are New York's best tailors?

Mostly in Midtown Manhattan: 130 West 57th Street, East 53rd Street, where Leonard Logsdail works, and the side streets off Fifth and Madison Avenues. Downtown, there are tailors on Christopher Street in the West Village, in NoHo and in Tribeca, and Martin Greenfield's factory is in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
