A. Caraceni

Via Fatebenefratelli, Brera · Since 1946

A. Caraceni is the largest and best known of the Caraceni tailors, and the fullest expression of the Milanese cut: a shoulder set slightly wider than the wearer's own, with a concave 'pagoda' line, a discreetly structured chest and wide peaked lapels with an olive-leaf tip. Augusto Caraceni, younger brother of the Rome tailor Domenico Caraceni, opened at Via Fatebenefratelli 16 in April 1946, after the war had closed his Paris atelier. His son Mario named the business after him in 1972. Since 1998 it has been run by Mario's daughter, Rita Maria Caraceni, and her husband, cutter Carlo Andreacchio, with their son Massimiliano. Clients have included Gianni Agnelli and Eugenio Montale. Prices are not published. It suits clients who want structured, formal Milanese tailoring.

  • Founded in April 1946 by Augusto Caraceni, and at the same address ever since
  • Run by the founder's granddaughter, Rita Maria Caraceni, and her husband, cutter Carlo Andreacchio
  • Made the tailcoat Eugenio Montale wore to receive the Nobel Prize
  • 21 employees and production worth more than $1.7 million in 2025

Rubinacci

Via Gesù, Quadrilatero della Moda · Since 1932

Rubinacci is the Neapolitan firm with the firmest footing in Milan: a shop at Via Gesù 1, a few steps from Via Montenapoleone, with a bespoke salon at the back where clients choose fabric and are fitted, while the garments are made in Naples. Gennaro Rubinacci founded the business there as London House in 1932, and his son Mariano, who died in 2026, opened in Milan in the late 1980s. The jacket is soft and Neapolitan but a little longer and lower-buttoning than most from Naples, and Milanese and English shoulders are also offered. The firm's stock of vintage fabric is a draw in itself. It suits a client who wants Neapolitan bespoke and a broad ready-to-wear range without traveling south.

  • Founded in Naples in 1932 by Gennaro Rubinacci as London House
  • In Milan since the late 1980s; bespoke salon at Via Gesù 1 since 2015
  • Three shoulders offered: Neapolitan, Milanese and English
  • About 800 custom-made suits in 2024, all made in Naples

Musella Dembech

Via Celestino IV, Milan

Musella Dembech is a small family workshop that pairs the lines of the Milanese suit with a lighter make. Francesco Musella trained in Caserta, then worked in Milan for Baratta, Giuseppe Colavito and Mario Donnini, where he made suits for Gianni Agnelli; his son, Gianfrancesco, now cuts. Jackets keep the high collar and leaf-shaped peak lapels of the Milanese tradition, with a padded shoulder narrower than A. Caraceni's and a roll at the sleeve head, and Gianfrancesco favors a double-breasted that fastens easily on its lower button. The Rake counted about 120 suits a year in 2020. Permanent Style gave it its artisan award in 2018 and put a two-piece at $6,400 in 2019. It suits clients who want Milanese lines without stiffness.

  • Francesco Musella cut for Mario Donnini, where he made suits for Gianni Agnelli
  • Gianfrancesco Musella cuts; the workshop makes about 120 suits a year
  • Named Best Artisan by Permanent Style in February 2018
  • Has visited Hong Kong for trunk shows with The Armoury

Zegna Bespoke

Via Montenapoleone and Via Bigli, Quadrilatero della Moda · Since 1910

Zegna, the Piedmont wool mill turned menswear group, has cut and made bespoke suits by hand in Milan since 2017. Ermenegildo Zegna founded the business as a wool mill in Trivero in 1910; it introduced Su Misura made-to-measure in 1972 and in March 2017 opened a bespoke atelier on the floor above its Via Montenapoleone store, with a private entrance at Via Bigli 26. Clients come for measurements, two fittings and delivery about three months later, and choose from about 900 fabrics, most woven in Trivero. Robb Report gave a starting price of $13,500 in 2017. It suits clients who want a full bespoke wardrobe from one maker and value the fabric as much as the cut.

  • Bespoke atelier opened in March 2017 above the Via Montenapoleone store
  • Bespoke made entirely in Milan, by a master tailor who cuts and six tailors (2024)
  • About 900 suitings, jacketings and coatings, most woven at Zegna's Trivero mill

Cesare Attolini

Via Bagutta, Quadrilatero della Moda · Since 1930

Cesare Attolini brings one of the founding names of Neapolitan tailoring to Via Bagutta, where its boutique takes bespoke and su misura orders. The company dates its line to 1930, when Vincenzo Attolini cut a soft jacket with a natural shoulder and the curved barchetta breast pocket; his son, Cesare, built the business in Casalnuovo from the late 1980s, and Cesare's sons, Giuseppe and Massimiliano, run it today. About 130 tailors work there, and Permanent Style found in 2026 that about half the tailoring output is bespoke or su misura, with collars and chests made by hand. Its bespoke jackets started at $8,600 in London that year. It suits clients who want a soft Neapolitan jacket fitted in Milan.

  • Traces its soft Neapolitan jacket to Vincenzo Attolini in 1930
  • Run by the third generation, Giuseppe and Massimiliano Attolini
  • About 130 tailors in Casalnuovo, near Naples
  • Bespoke jacket reviewed by Permanent Style in 2026

Prata & Mastrale

Via Appiani, Brera · Since 2010

Prata & Mastrale runs its tailoring like a private club, a short walk from A. Caraceni, now on Via Appiani. Aldo Invitti di Conca, a Bocconi MBA from a Neapolitan noble family who spent 15 years in his family's toothpaste business, founded it in 2010. He is the patron, not the cutter: The Rake found five tailors, including one cutter, at number 17 in 2020, and Forbes Italia named the master tailor as Cristiano Zerboni. The jackets are made in Milan with a Neapolitan accent and a moderate, unpadded shoulder, and clients are received in a salon with a bar and armchairs. Prices are not published. It suits clients who want a softer made-to-measure suit and enjoy the social side of commissioning one.

  • Founded in 2010 by Aldo Invitti di Conca; now at Via Appiani 1
  • Five tailors, including one cutter, worked on site in 2020 (The Rake)
  • Jackets made in Milan with a moderate shoulder and no shoulder pad

Isaia

Via Pietro Verri, Quadrilatero della Moda · Since 1920

Isaia brings Neapolitan made-to-measure to Via Pietro Verri, a few steps from Via Montenapoleone. Enrico Isaia began in Naples in 1920 as a fabric merchant to the city's tailors, added a workshop making suits to measure, and in 1957 moved production with his brothers to Casalnuovo, where every garment is still made. Gianluca Isaia, of the family's third generation, runs the company, which had more than 300 employees in 2023. Jackets have a soft, unpadded shoulder, a high gorge and the curved barchetta breast pocket; Gentleman's Gazette notes a hand-sewn collar and buttonholes but calls it a factory suit. Made-to-measure is ordered in the boutique from about 800 fabrics, including vicuña. It suits clients who want a soft Neapolitan suit without the wait for bespoke.

  • Founded in Naples in 1920; made in Casalnuovo since 1957

Rocco Rinarelli

Via Terraggio, near Cadorna · Since 1974

Rocco Rinarelli is a veteran independent tailor who has made men's suits in central Milan for half a century. Born in Gerocarne, Calabria, he began sewing as a child, moved to Milan in 1960 and learned the trade in tailoring shops in the Ticinese and Cairoli areas. He opened his own business on Via San Giovanni sul Muro in 1974 and moved to Via Terraggio, near Cadorna, in 1989. When the Cinema Orchidea redevelopment forced him out in 2024, he took an unused space next door from the city and reopened at Via Terraggio 5, aged 82. He makes men's suits to measure in the traditional way for Milanese professionals and some foreign clients. It suits those who want an old-school tailor rather than a brand.

  • Has worked as a tailor in Milan since 1960
  • Own business since 1974; on Via Terraggio since 1989
  • Reopened at Via Terraggio 5 in November 2024, at 82

How a score is built

A tailor that scores 9 for cut, 8 for fit, 9 for reputation and 7 for service earns 84 out of 100. Scores decide the order within each city; they are not compared across cities, because a Savile Row suit and a Dubai suit answer different needs and budgets. Every tailor in Milan is scored the same way.

Bespoke in Milan: your questions

How much does a bespoke suit cost in Milan?

Published figures are scarce and often old. Musella Dembech charged $6,400 including VAT in 2019, and an A. Caraceni suit cost about $5,400 in 2011. Expect upward of $4,500 to $5,600 at Milan's bespoke tailors before the fabric you choose; made-to-measure starts under $1,100.

How long does a suit take in Milan?

Allow two to three months for bespoke. Mario Caraceni of A. Caraceni put it at about two and a half months from choosing the fabric to delivery, and a Rubinacci suit in Milan may take up to six weeks. Made-to-measure ateliers such as Casa Zaffarano quote four to six weeks.

What is the Milanese cut?

A more structured jacket than in Naples or Rome, built with canvas, horsehair, chest flannel and shoulder pads. It is the closest Italian style to English tailoring, though less restrictive than a typical Savile Row coat. In the Caraceni line, the waist is shaped, the lapel is wide with a slight belly, and the collar and shoulder have more shape than in Neapolitan tailoring.

Can I reclaim VAT on a suit made in Milan?

Usually, if you live outside the EU and take the finished suit home yourself. Italy's tax-free scheme covers goods of $80 or more per invoice, VAT included, bought for personal use and carried out of the EU in your luggage by the end of the third month after the sale. Italian VAT is 22 percent, but refund operators charge fees, so expect roughly 10 to 15 percent back. If the tailor ships the suit to you later, the tourist scheme does not apply, so ask how the export will be invoiced.

Do I need an appointment?

It is best to book. A. Caraceni works by appointment only from a second-floor atelier with no shopfront, and made-to-measure ateliers such as Casa Zaffarano also see clients by appointment. Milan's bespoke tailors are friendly to visitors who drop by, but an appointment is still wise.

What is the difference between bespoke and made-to-measure in Milan?

In Italian, both are often sold as su misura. Bespoke is the absolute su misura, a one-off that requires time, fittings and a significant investment; made-to-measure is less artisanal but still highly personalized. Ask whether a paper pattern will be cut for you alone and how many fittings are included.
