Basted fittings, as many as needed

W.W. Chan's strength is consistency. Simon Crompton of Permanent Style, who has followed the firm since 2010, judged the finishing of his 2020 tweed jacket "as good as any normal English tailor", and a Hong Kong client on Styleforum called it one of the most consistent makers in the city. Construction is traditional: a floating canvas, hand-sewn lapels and buttonholes, and as many basted fittings as the fit requires. Patrick Chu leads the cutting, with Dik Lam a main cutter since 2009, and 12 tailors make the clothes: two in the shop and ten in a workshop in Kowloon.

The house line has softened over the past 15 years. The standard jacket now uses little padding, a light three-layer chest, a 3-roll-2 front and a Milanese lapel buttonhole, but the shop will build a roped, padded shoulder or a Neapolitan shirt shoulder on request. That flexibility is also the caveat. Crompton calls Chan "more malleable" than tailors with a fixed style, and clients who arrive without a clear idea of what they want can end up with a generic result.

Price is the other draw. The firm does not publish prices; Permanent Style put a two-piece suit at $2,300 in 2020, and Tatler Asia gave $2,100 to $2,700 the same year. Expect more now. Patrick Chu quotes about six weeks for a suit in Hong Kong. Against the fast tailors of Tsim Sha Tsui, this is slower and dearer, but it is true bespoke, cut and made in Hong Kong; Vogue Hong Kong noted in 2025 that most of the city's tailoring houses have moved production elsewhere.

Choose W.W. Chan for a first bespoke suit in Hong Kong or a classic business wardrobe. Bring pictures of what you want and ask for Patrick Chu when booking fittings. Clients abroad can order at its trunk shows in Europe, the United States and Singapore.

Questions

How much does a W.W. Chan bespoke suit cost?

The firm does not publish prices. Permanent Style put a two-piece suit at $2,300 and a jacket at $1,700 in December 2020, and Tatler Asia gave $2,100 to $2,700 for a suit the same year. The fabric sets the final figure, and prices are likely to have risen since.

How long does a W.W. Chan suit take?

Head tailor Patrick Chu told Permanent Style in 2026 that a quick bespoke suit takes about six weeks in Hong Kong. Fittings continue until the fit is right. Orders placed at trunk shows abroad take longer, because fittings follow the travel schedule.

Are W.W. Chan suits made in Hong Kong?

Yes. The firm has 12 tailors: two in the shop on Queen's Road Central for urgent work and ten in a larger workshop in Kowloon, according to Permanent Style in 2026. Cutting is done in Hong Kong.

When was W.W. Chan founded?

Sources differ between 1948 and 1960. The firm's own timeline says Chan Wing-wah moved to Hong Kong and began making suits in 1948, set up a workshop in Kowloon in 1950 and opened his first shop, on Cameron Road, in 1960. Some guides give 1952.

Can I order from W.W. Chan outside Hong Kong?

Yes. The firm runs trunk shows; its 2026 schedule covers Zurich, London, Washington, New York, Chicago, Dallas, Austin, Beverly Hills, San Francisco, San Carlos and Singapore. Appointments are booked through sales@wwchan.com.
