Brendon Babenzien has left J.Crew, where he had been men's creative director since 2021. Puck first reported his exit on 17 February 2026, and Hypebeast reported the next day that the departure was effective immediately, with transition details still to come. Babenzien is expected to concentrate on Noah, the label he runs with his wife, Estelle Bailey-Babenzien.

J.Crew did not name a successor. The company continues under chief executive Libby Wadle and women's creative director Olympia Gayot.

The Japanese fashion site Fashionsnap reported that Babenzien said in a statement that his role at the company had come to an end, and that he was grateful to have helped grow the men's business and to have played a part in reviving the brand. Puck described the exit as sudden.

Hired after bankruptcy

J.Crew filed for Chapter 11 in May 2020, the first major US retailer to do so during the pandemic. Babenzien joined in May 2021; MR Magazine described the appointment as a strategic move to modernize the brand after it emerged from bankruptcy. He had previously worked at Supreme, where Hypebeast describes him as the former design director, and he co-founded Noah.

His tenure changed how J.Crew men's clothing fits. Under Babenzien the brand moved away from the era of its slim-fit Ludlow suit toward a relaxed, nostalgic look that revived archive styles from the 1990s, an approach Hypebeast labeled neo-prep. He reintroduced the Giant Fit chino, leaned on fabrics such as Harris Tweed and Irish linen, and helped bring back the printed J.Crew catalog in 2024. In 2024 the company also opened a men's-focused store at 19 Bond Street in NoHo. His last projects included the Rollneck Remix series, which asked emerging New York designers to rework the brand's roll-neck sweaters.

The move from slim cuts to relaxed fits shows most clearly in trouser width, as in this slim chino beside a fuller straight leg.

Puck, in a paywalled report, described Babenzien as having been at the forefront of the recent return to traditional American dressing.

What it means for tailoring

For suit and trouser buyers, the shift showed up in the fits on the shelf. Hypebeast credits Babenzien with moving J.Crew from slim cuts to relaxed shapes, which put roomier trousers such as the Giant Fit chino back into a mainstream American range alongside heavier, more traditional fabrics.

Whoever replaces him will decide whether that direction continues. If you are weighing the fits on offer at mainstream brands now, our guide to slim, tailored and classic fits and our comparison of pleated and flat-front trousers explain the trade-offs.
