Isaia is the most complete Neapolitan made-to-measure offer in Milan. The family began in 1920 as fabric merchants to the tailors of Naples, added a small workshop making suits to measure, and in 1957 Enrico Isaia and his brothers, Rosario and Corrado, moved production to Casalnuovo, a town where, QuiFinanza reported, half the residents were tailors. For decades the firm also made private-label tailoring, most notably for Valentino, according to Gentleman's Gazette.
The jacket is recognizably southern: a soft, unpadded shoulder with a little roping at the sleeve head, a high gorge, the curved barchetta breast pocket and, on many sport coats, patch pockets and a quarter lining. Gentleman's Gazette is candid about the make. The collar and buttonholes are sewn by hand, but machines do much of the rest, including the canvas padding, and it calls Isaia a factory suit rather than a handmade one.
Made-to-measure is where Isaia is strongest. The service starts in the boutique with a conversation and measurements, then the choice of fabric, lining, buttons and stitching from a collection of about 800 fabrics, about 90 percent exclusive to the house, with vicuña offered in made-to-measure. Milan prices are not published; Gentleman's Gazette put Isaia suits from about $4,600 in 2022, rising to about $15,000 in made-to-measure with rare fabrics.
Choose it for a soft Neapolitan suit or jacket ordered in central Milan, at a store open every day of the week. For a pattern cut for you alone and several fittings, Rubinacci and Cesare Attolini, a few streets away, go further. Ask Isaia how many fittings the made-to-measure order includes and how long it takes.
