Musella Dembech makes one of the most personal suits in Milan. Where A. Caraceni builds a firm, formal jacket, the Musellas keep the Milanese lapel, high collar and line but lighten the make. In the navy cotton double-breasted that Permanent Style reviewed in 2017, the body and sleeves were unlined, the shoulder pad was a single ply and the sleeve head natural; Simon Crompton described the result as northern lines and lapels with southern structure and shoulders.

The lineage is sound. Francesco Musella learned in Caserta in the workshop of his grandfather, Lorenzo, then cut in Milan for Baratta, for Giuseppe Colavito, heir to Cesare Tosi's method, and for Mario Donnini, where he made more than 200 suits for Gianni Agnelli. His son, Gianfrancesco, studies old English tailoring manuals and prefers the 'transformabile' double-breasted, which buttons easily on the lower button.

It is a small operation. In 2014 the family worked in one room of their apartment; by 2020 The Rake described a workshop and showroom with four full-time tailors and three outside, making about 120 suits a year. Permanent Style put a two-piece at $6,400 including VAT in 2019, up from $5,100 in 2014, and The Armoury lists a starting price of $5,700 and a production time of a year for its Hong Kong trunk-show orders. About 90 percent of sales go to clients from abroad.

Choose it for a double-breasted or a jacket with Milanese lines and a soft, comfortable make, cut by the person who fits you. The Musellas do not visit London or New York, so plan on fittings in Milan. Independent reviews have been scarce since 2020; confirm the current price before ordering.

Questions

How much does a Musella Dembech suit cost?

The workshop does not publish prices. Permanent Style put a two-piece suit at $6,400 including VAT in 2019, up from $5,600 in 2017 and $5,100 in 2014. The Armoury lists a starting price of $5,700 for suits ordered at its Hong Kong trunk shows. Ask for a current quote.

Where is Musella Dembech?

At Via Celestino IV 9, 20123 Milan. It is open Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 12.30pm and 2pm to 6.30pm, and Saturday morning, by appointment. Call +39 340 852 0357 or email muselladembech@gmail.com.

Who are the Musellas?

Francesco Musella, who trained in Caserta and cut for the Milan tailors Baratta, Giuseppe Colavito and Mario Donnini, and his son, Gianfrancesco, who cuts the patterns. Francesco's wife has also worked on the jackets. The workshop has been run as a family business across three generations.

How does Musella Dembech differ from A. Caraceni?

Both work in the northern Italian tradition, with peaked lapels and a shaped shoulder. The Rake noted that Musella Dembech uses straight rather than curved front seams, a narrower shoulder, a higher collar and a looser fit, and Permanent Style found its make lighter, closer to southern Italian tailoring.

Does Musella Dembech travel?

Only to Hong Kong, where it has held trunk shows with The Armoury; no upcoming dates are listed. Permanent Style reported no plans to visit London, and the workshop does not visit New York.
