Mandarin Collar and Nehru Jackets: What They Are and How to Wear Them

A collar that stands instead of folding changes the whole jacket. Here is where the style comes from, how formal it is, and how to wear one without a tie.

The short answer

A mandarin collar is a short, unfolded collar that stands up around the neck, named after the officials of imperial China. A Nehru jacket is a hip-length tailored jacket with that collar, buttoned to the neck, adapted from Indian coats such as the achkan and named in the West after Jawaharlal Nehru. Wear it without a tie, over a band-collar shirt or fine knit.

  • A mandarin collar is a stand collar with no fold, no points and no lapels.
  • The Nehru jacket comes from Indian closed-collar coats; the West named it after India's first prime minister.
  • It is never worn with a tie: choose a band-collar shirt, a kurta or a fine knit underneath.
  • Formality depends on fabric and color, from a linen jacket for summer parties to a black bandhgala for evening.
  • The collar has no lapel to hide behind, so fit at the neck matters more than on any suit.
In this guide

Most Western jackets have a collar that folds over and a lapel that rolls back. A mandarin collar does neither: it stands straight up around the neck and closes at the front. The style has deep roots in Chinese and Indian dress, it had a famous moment in Western fashion in the 1960s, and today it is worn at weddings, evening receptions and parties by men who want something sharp that does not need a tie. Knowing the names, the levels of formality and what to wear underneath makes it easy to get right.

What is a mandarin collar?

A mandarin collar is a band of fabric that stands up from the neckline and closes, or nearly closes, at the front. It has no turned-down part, no points and no lapels. The English name refers to the mandarins, the officials of imperial China, whose robes in the Qing dynasty (1644 to 1912) had stand collars. The same collar appears on the changshan, the long gown traditionally worn by Chinese men, on the qipao or cheongsam worn by women, and on the Tang jacket, which fastens with knotted fabric buttons.

In Western shirts the same idea is usually called a band collar or stand collar; our guide to shirt collars shows how it compares with point and spread collars. It is often confused with the Zhongshan suit, known in the West as the Mao suit, but that jacket has a small turned-down collar and four patch pockets. Hong Kong's Shanghainese tailors still make the changshan and qipao, as our guide to Shanghainese tailoring in Hong Kong explains.

What is a Nehru jacket?

A Nehru jacket is a single-breasted, hip-length tailored jacket with a mandarin collar and a row of buttons that runs up to the neck. It has no lapels. It was adapted from Indian closed-collar coats such as the achkan, a longer coat, and is close kin to the bandhgala, whose name means closed neck. The West named it after Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister from 1947 to 1964, who was regularly photographed in closed-collar coats.

It had a brief run in European and American fashion in the late 1960s, helped along by entertainers such as the Beatles and Sammy Davis Jr., and faded in the early 1970s. In India the name is now often used for a sleeveless version worn over a kurta, also sold as the Modi jacket after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while the sleeved jacket is usually called a bandhgala.

Nehru jacket vs bandhgala vs sherwani: what is the difference?

All three have a stand collar and button to the neck. The differences are length, cut and occasion.

Nehru jacket

Hip length

  • Worn as a separate jacket in the West
  • In India, often sleeveless over a kurta
  • Smart casual to cocktail
  • Wool, linen, cotton or velvet

Bandhgala

Suit-jacket length

  • Cut close, like a tailored suit jacket
  • Often worn as a suit, known as the Jodhpuri suit
  • Business, receptions and formal evenings
  • In black or midnight blue, formal evening wear

Sherwani

Knee length or longer

  • Worn over a kurta with slim or straight trousers
  • Wedding wear, above all for the groom
  • Often silk or brocade, sometimes embroidered
  • The most ceremonial of the three
Length and cut separate the three: the Nehru jacket is the shortest and most casual, the sherwani the longest and most ceremonial.

The Jodhpuri suit takes its name from Jodhpur, the former princely state in Rajasthan, and pairs a bandhgala with matching trousers. In India a dark bandhgala suit is a standard choice for formal evening events and is often worn in place of a dinner jacket.

How formal is a Nehru jacket?

A stand-collar jacket can be casual or formal, and fabric and color decide which. The ladder below runs from the most ceremonial version to the most relaxed.

Most formal

  1. Sherwani in silk or brocade

    Weddings, especially the groom

  2. Black or midnight blue bandhgala suit, fine wool

    Formal evenings and receptions

  3. Navy or charcoal bandhgala suit

    Business, ceremonies, cocktail events

  4. Velvet or dark wool Nehru jacket, dark trousers

Cocktail parties, creative black tie, festive events

  5. Linen or cotton Nehru jacket

    Summer parties, smart casual

  6. Band-collar shirt on its own

    Casual

Most casual

Darker colors, finer fabrics and longer cuts are more formal; linen, cotton and lighter colors are more relaxed.

In the West, a dark wool Nehru jacket sits closest to cocktail attire: it is smarter than a blazer and open collar, and less formal than a dinner jacket. It does not meet a code that requires a tie, such as a conservative business office or a club that asks for jacket and tie. For events where a tie is optional, it is one of the best alternatives to a suit without a tie, because the closed collar never looks unfinished.

What do you wear with a Nehru jacket?

Start with what goes under the collar. A band-collar shirt is the classic choice, because its low stand sits neatly inside the jacket collar; white or pale blue is the most formal. In Indian dress the jacket goes over a kurta. In the West, a fine merino crew-neck or a thin roll-neck works at parties and creative events. Avoid a shirt with an ordinary collar, whose points push against the stand collar or poke out above it.

Wear the jacket buttoned for formal events; worn open, it reads as casual. A plain white pocket square in the chest pocket suits every version. Keep accessories quiet, because the collar and buttons are already the detail. Mojari and juttis, the embroidered slip-on shoes of North India, belong with Indian dress; with Western trousers, choose loafers or oxfords.

Common mistakes with a Nehru jacket

  • Wearing a tie, or a shirt whose collar points push out above the stand collar.
  • A collar that gapes at the front or stands away from the back of the neck.
  • Leaving the jacket open at a formal event, where it should be buttoned.
  • Adding a loud shirt, a loud pocket square and patterned trousers: let the collar be the detail.
  • Matching the fabric to the wrong event: linen at an evening reception, or a black bandhgala at a beach party.
  • A jacket too short to cover the seat, which makes it look like a shirt rather than tailoring.

Can you wear a Nehru jacket to a wedding or a black tie event?

At Indian and South Asian weddings, a bandhgala or a Nehru jacket over a kurta is a natural choice for guests, and the groom usually wears a sherwani. Customs about colors vary by region, religion and ceremony, so ask the couple or their family if you are unsure. Many weddings span several events with different dress, from bright colors at daytime ceremonies to darker, richer fabrics at the evening reception.

At Western black tie events, a black or midnight blue bandhgala is widely accepted as formal national dress, and some invitations say black tie or national dress for exactly this reason. Royal Ascot, for example, allows overseas visitors to wear their formal national dress in the Royal Enclosure, where other men wear morning dress. If you are not wearing it as national dress, a mandarin-collar dinner jacket is a fashion choice: well judged at creative black tie, less so at a strict black tie event, where a dinner jacket and bow tie are expected.

Having one made: what to tell your tailor

A stand collar is less forgiving than a lapel. There is nothing to hide a collar that gapes, presses on the neck or sits away from it, so the pattern needs care. Any skilled tailor can make one, and many tailors in India, Hong Kong and Bangkok make them often. These are the decisions to make before the first fitting.

Seven decisions for a made-to-order Nehru jacket or bandhgala

  1. 1

    Choose the style

Decide between a hip-length Nehru jacket, a suit-length bandhgala, worn alone or as a suit, and a knee-length sherwani for a wedding.

  2. 2

    Choose the fabric

A year-round worsted wool is the most versatile. Linen and cotton suit summer, velvet suits winter evenings, and silk or brocade suits weddings.

Tip: For a first one, choose navy or charcoal wool: it works at the office, at parties and at many weddings.

  3. 3

    Set the collar height

A taller collar suits a longer neck; a lower collar suits a shorter one. You should be able to slide a finger inside the collar when it is fastened.

  4. 4

    Choose the front and buttons

Decide on a square or rounded front edge at the hem, and on buttons: covered in fabric for evening, horn for daywear, or metal for a ceremonial look.

  5. 5

    Choose the pockets

A welt chest pocket and jetted or flap pockets at the hip are the dressiest; patch pockets make the jacket casual.

  6. 6

    Decide on vents and lining

Side vents help the jacket sit cleanly over the seat and let you reach your trouser pockets. A half lining keeps a summer jacket cooler.

  7. 7

Order matching trousers if you want a suit

A bandhgala with matching trousers covers formal evenings; a Nehru jacket on its own pairs with trousers you already own.

What to check at the fitting

  • The collar meets cleanly at the front and sits close to the neck all the way round, without pressing.
  • The collar does not ride up or fall away at the back of the neck when you turn your head.
  • The front hangs straight with no pulling around the buttons.
  • The jacket covers the seat; a bandhgala should be about the length of a suit jacket.
  • The sleeves show about ¼ to ½ inch (6 to 13 mm) of shirt cuff.
  • The shirt collar underneath sits inside the jacket collar and does not show above it.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a Nehru collar and a mandarin collar?

A Nehru collar and a mandarin collar are essentially the same thing: a short collar that stands up around the neck with no fold, points or lapels. Mandarin collar is the more general term and is used for shirts and Chinese garments. Nehru collar is usually used for tailored jackets in the style of the Nehru jacket.

Can you wear a tie with a Nehru jacket?

No. A Nehru jacket buttons up to the neck with a stand collar, so there is no space or opening for a tie. Wear it over a band-collar shirt, a kurta or a fine knit instead. If an event requires a tie, wear a suit and tie rather than a Nehru jacket.

Is a Nehru jacket formal?

A Nehru jacket can be casual or formal depending on fabric and color. A linen or cotton one is smart casual, while a dark wool or velvet one suits cocktail events. A black or midnight blue bandhgala in fine wool is formal evening wear and is often worn in place of a dinner jacket in India.

What shirt do you wear under a Nehru jacket?

The best shirt under a Nehru jacket is a band-collar shirt, whose low stand sits neatly inside the jacket collar. White or pale blue is the most formal. A kurta is traditional with Indian dress, and a fine merino crew-neck or thin roll-neck works at parties. Avoid ordinary shirt collars, whose points push against the stand collar.

Is a Mao suit the same as a Nehru jacket?

No. The Mao suit, properly called the Zhongshan suit, has a small turned-down collar and four patch pockets, and comes from early twentieth-century China. The Nehru jacket has a true stand collar with no fold and comes from Indian closed-collar coats such as the achkan and bandhgala.

Can you wear a Nehru jacket to a black tie event?

A black or midnight blue bandhgala is widely accepted at black tie events as formal national dress, and some invitations say black tie or national dress. Worn purely as a fashion choice, a mandarin-collar evening jacket suits creative black tie better than a strict black tie event, where a dinner jacket and bow tie are expected.

What is a bandhgala?

A bandhgala is an Indian jacket with a closed stand collar, cut close to the body like a tailored suit jacket; the name means closed neck. Worn with matching trousers it is known as a Jodhpuri suit, after the former princely state of Jodhpur. In dark colors it is standard formal evening wear in India.
