The short answer
What to wear to a wedding as a male guest depends on the dress code. With no dress code, wear a navy or charcoal suit, a white or pale blue shirt, a silk tie and dark leather shoes. Wear a tuxedo only for black tie, black tie optional or a formal evening wedding, and avoid white, ivory or anything that upstages the groom.
- No dress code: a navy or charcoal suit, white or pale blue shirt, silk tie and dark leather shoes.
- Black tie means a tuxedo; black tie optional means a tuxedo or a dark suit and tie.
- Cocktail and semi-formal both mean a suit for men, usually with a tie.
- Never wear white, ivory or an all-white look unless the couple asks for it.
- Dress one step below the groom, never above him.

Working out what to wear to a wedding as a male guest is mostly a matter of reading the invitation. The dress code, the time of day and the venue tell you how formal to be. Your job as a guest is simple: look as though you made an effort for the couple, and do not draw attention away from them. A good suit, worn well, covers most weddings.

What does each wedding dress code mean for men?
Each wedding dress code sets a minimum level of formality, from a tailcoat at white tie to a linen shirt at a beach wedding. The table decodes the wording you are most likely to see on an invitation. When the couple adds their own notes, such as no ties or garden heels, those notes override the general rule.
| Invitation says | What it means | What to wear | Tie? | Shoes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| White tie | The most formal evening code; rare at weddings | Black tailcoat, matching trousers with two lines of braid, white pique waistcoat, stiff-fronted wing-collar shirt | White pique bow tie | Black patent leather |
| Black tie | Formal evening; a suit is not enough | Tuxedo (dinner suit) in black or midnight blue, white dress shirt | Black silk bow tie | Black patent or highly polished black oxfords |
| Black tie optional | Tuxedo welcome, dark suit acceptable | Tuxedo if you own or can rent one; otherwise a navy or charcoal suit and white shirt | Bow tie with a tuxedo; dark silk tie with a suit | Black oxfords |
| Formal | Dark suit and tie at minimum; a tuxedo is acceptable for an evening event | Navy or charcoal suit, white shirt | Yes, silk | Black oxfords |
| Cocktail | A suit, with room for a little more color | Suit in navy, gray or mid-blue; color in the tie and pocket square | Yes, usually | Black or dark brown oxfords or derbies |
| Semi-formal | A suit, lighter for day, darker for evening | Daytime: light gray, mid-blue or tan suit; evening: navy or charcoal | Usually; ask if unsure | Oxfords, derbies or smart loafers |
| Smart casual | A jacket, but not a suit | Sport coat or blazer, wool trousers or chinos, collared shirt | Optional; a knit tie works | Loafers, derbies or suede shoes |
| Beach | Light, breathable and relaxed, but still dressed | Beach formal: light linen or cotton suit; beach casual: linen shirt and light trousers | Optional, rarely needed | Leather or suede loafers |
In Britain, an invitation may also say morning dress (a morning coat with gray striped trousers) or lounge suit (an ordinary suit and tie).

Cocktail and semi-formal sound different but ask the same thing of men: a suit. The difference is in the details. At a cocktail wedding you can wear a brighter tie or a patterned pocket square; at a semi-formal daytime wedding a lighter suit is fine. For more on the formal end, see black tie and black tie optional; for the relaxed end, cocktail attire and smart casual.
What should you wear if the invitation has no dress code?
With no dress code, wear a suit and tie: a navy or charcoal suit, a white or pale blue shirt, a silk tie and black or dark brown leather shoes. It is correct at almost any wedding, and you can always remove the tie later. Then read the other clues on the invitation to fine-tune the color and fabric.
| Clue | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Ceremony at 6 p.m. or later | Formal evening; dark suit at minimum, tuxedo if guests are told black tie |
| Midday or afternoon ceremony | Daytime suit; lighter colors are fine in spring and summer |
| Grand hotel, ballroom or cathedral | Lean formal: dark suit, plain tie, black shoes |
| Garden, barn, vineyard or country house | Mid-gray, blue or brown suit; textured fabrics; brown shoes |
| Beach or waterfront | Light suit in linen, cotton or wool-linen; loafers |
| Wedding website | Often states the dress code in full; check it before buying anything |
Can men wear a navy suit to a wedding?
Yes. A navy suit is the most useful suit a wedding guest can own: it suits day and evening, every season and almost every dress code from cocktail to black tie optional. Change the shirt, tie and shoes to adjust its formality. With a white shirt, a dark silk tie and black oxfords it reads formal; with a pale blue shirt, a lighter tie and brown shoes it suits a garden in June.

Gray is the other easy choice. Charcoal behaves like navy; mid and light gray are better in daylight than at an evening reception. For combinations, see what to wear with a navy suit and what to wear with a gray suit.
Can you wear a black suit to a wedding?
Yes, you can wear a black suit to an evening or formal wedding, but navy or charcoal is usually a better choice. A black suit with a white shirt and a dark silk tie looks smart after dark and is acceptable at a black tie optional wedding. In daylight, at a garden or beach wedding, black looks heavy and can read as funeral clothing.
Two things to avoid: a black shirt with a black suit and black tie, which reads as a uniform, and treating a black suit as a tuxedo at a black tie wedding. A tuxedo has silk-faced lapels, a trouser stripe and a bow tie; a black suit has none of these. See can you wear a black suit for more.
Do you have to wear a tie to a wedding?
You should wear a tie to any wedding marked formal, black tie optional, cocktail or semi-formal, and to any wedding with no dress code. You can skip it at a smart casual or beach wedding, or when the couple says no ties. If you are unsure, wear one: you can always take it off when the groom and his party take theirs off at the reception.
- Black tie and white tie: a bow tie is part of the dress code. Learn to tie a bow tie rather than wearing a pre-tied one if you can.
- Formal, cocktail, semi-formal: a silk tie in a solid, a small pattern or a grenadine weave.
- Smart casual: optional. A knit tie with a sport coat looks deliberate without being stiff.
- Beach: usually none. If you wear one, choose linen, cotton or a light silk in a pale color.
What colors should you not wear to a wedding as a guest?
As a male guest, avoid white, ivory and cream suits, and avoid all-white looks unless the couple asks for them. White belongs to the bride by convention in most Western weddings, and a pale suit can photograph as white. A white shirt under a colored suit is always fine.
- White, ivory or cream suits and all-white outfits, unless the invitation asks for them.
- The wedding party's exact colors. If you know the groomsmen wear sage green, wear something else.
- Head-to-toe black at a daytime wedding. It looks somber in sunlight.
- Very bright suits and loud patterns. A red or electric blue suit makes you the subject of the photographs.
- Colors with a special meaning in the couple's tradition. In some cultures, white or black signals mourning and red is reserved for the bride. If the wedding follows a tradition you do not know, ask.
How do you avoid upstaging the groom?
Dress one step below the groom, never above him. If you know he is in a lounge suit, do not wear a tuxedo or morning dress. If he is in a light gray suit with a waistcoat, a plain navy two-piece is perfect. The guest who outdresses the groom is the one people remember for the wrong reason.
How should you dress for the season and venue?
Adjust the fabric and color to the season, and keep the formality set by the dress code. A wool suit of 9 to 11 oz (280 to 340 g) works through most of the year. For a summer garden, go lighter and paler; for a winter evening, go darker and warmer, and plan the coat.
| Season | Suit | Fabric | Extras |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | Navy, mid-gray, light gray, mid-blue | Worsted wool, 9 to 11 oz (280 to 340 g) | Light raincoat for outdoor ceremonies |
| Summer | Light gray, mid-blue, tan, navy in a light fabric | Tropical wool, fresco, wool-linen, 7 to 10 oz (220 to 310 g) | Half-lined jacket; loafers for daytime |
| Autumn | Charcoal, navy, brown, olive | Worsted or light flannel, 10 to 13 oz (310 to 400 g) | A three-piece suit works well |
| Winter | Charcoal, navy, deep green | Flannel or heavier worsted, 12 to 14 oz (370 to 430 g) | Knee-length overcoat and a scarf |
For a winter wedding, the coat is part of the outfit; a knee-length overcoat over a dark suit is the right choice, and our guide to overcoat styles explains which ones work over tailoring. Add a scarf in a quiet color and learn how to tie a scarf with a coat. A three-piece suit also looks right in winter and keeps you looking dressed once jackets come off. For a summer or destination wedding, see beach wedding attire.

Shoes and accessories for a wedding guest
Wear leather shoes that are polished and comfortable enough to stand and dance in for hours. Black oxfords suit every formal and evening wedding; dark brown oxfords, derbies or loafers suit daytime and country weddings. Brown shoes are fine at a wedding with navy, gray or tan suits in daylight; at an evening formal wedding, choose black.
Before you leave for the wedding
- Shoes polished, with socks that match the trousers, long enough to cover the shin when you sit.
- Belt matched to the shoes, or braces if you wear a waistcoat.
- Shirt pressed, collar fitted so the tie knot sits closed.
- Pocket square that complements the tie without matching it exactly.
- Jacket pockets nearly empty so the jacket hangs cleanly.
- A spare collar stay and a few safety pins in a pocket.
When can you take off your jacket and tie?
Keep your jacket on through the ceremony, the receiving line and any formal meal or speeches. Take your cue from the groom and the hosts: once they remove their jackets, or once the dancing starts, you can follow. In serious heat, the couple or the officiant will often tell guests that jackets can come off; until then, leave yours on.
Plan for the moment the jacket comes off. A fitted, freshly pressed long-sleeved shirt looks fine on its own; a billowing shirt bunched over a belt does not. A waistcoat solves the problem neatly, which is one reason a three-piece suit works so well at weddings. Hang the jacket on your chair rather than leaving it in a heap, and put it back on to leave.
The tailor's view: getting your guest suit ready
Take your suit to a tailor at least two weeks before the wedding, and earlier in spring and summer. Hemming trousers, shortening sleeves without working buttonholes and taking in a jacket or trouser waist are routine jobs that most tailors can do in a week or two. Shoulders that are too wide cannot be fixed well, and a jacket that is too short cannot be lengthened; if the suit has those faults, buy another.
If you attend several weddings a year, invest in one excellent navy suit in a year-round fabric and have it fitted properly. It will cover most invitations you receive. To find a tailor who can make or fit one, see our ranking of the best tailors in London or the full dress codes guide.
Questions people ask
What should a man wear to a wedding with no dress code?
Wear a navy or charcoal suit, a white or pale blue shirt, a silk tie and black or dark brown leather shoes. This is correct at almost any wedding. Take the tie off later if the groom and his party do.
Can you wear a black suit to a wedding?
Yes, a black suit is acceptable at an evening or formal wedding, worn with a white shirt and a dark tie. In daylight it can look heavy and somber, so navy or charcoal is usually the better choice. A black suit is not a substitute for a tuxedo at a black tie wedding.
Do you have to wear a tie to a wedding?
Wear a tie to any wedding marked formal, black tie optional, cocktail or semi-formal, and when there is no dress code. A tie is optional at smart casual and beach weddings or when the couple says no ties. If unsure, wear one and remove it when the groom does.
What color should you not wear to a wedding as a guest?
Avoid white, ivory and cream suits and all-white outfits unless the couple asks for them. Also avoid the wedding party's colors, very bright suits and loud patterns. A white shirt under a colored suit is always fine.
Can men wear a navy suit to a wedding?
Yes, a navy suit is the most versatile choice for a wedding guest. It works day or evening, in every season and at every dress code from cocktail to black tie optional. Adjust the shirt, tie and shoes to make it more or less formal.
Can I wear a tuxedo to a wedding that is not black tie?
Only if the invitation says black tie optional or formal and the wedding is in the evening. At a daytime wedding or one marked cocktail or semi-formal, a tuxedo overdresses you and may outdress the groom. Wear a dark suit instead.
Can you wear jeans to a wedding?
Not unless the couple explicitly invites it. Even at a casual wedding, wool or cotton trousers with a jacket show more respect for the occasion. Dark jeans with a sport coat belong at a relaxed party, not a ceremony.
Can you wear brown shoes to a wedding?
Yes, brown shoes are fine at a daytime, garden or country wedding with a navy, gray, blue or tan suit. Choose black for an evening, formal or black tie wedding. Dark brown is more formal than light tan.
