The short answer
Morning dress is formal daytime wear for men: a black or gray morning coat with one button and tails, gray striped or checked trousers, a waistcoat, a white or pale shirt with double cuffs, a silk tie and black oxfords, usually with a top hat. Wear it before evening at formal British weddings, Royal Ascot's Royal Enclosure and state or civic occasions.
- Morning dress is daywear only: it is never the dress code for an event that starts after 6 pm.
- The coat is black or gray, single-breasted with one button and peak lapels, its fronts curving back to knee-length tails.
- A black coat with striped trousers is the most formal version; a matching gray morning suit is for weddings and the races.
- Royal Ascot's Royal Enclosure (16 to 20 June 2026) requires black, gray or navy morning dress, a waistcoat, a tie, a black or gray top hat and black shoes.
- Hire costs about $200 to $335 in 2026; buy or commission once you expect to wear it three or more times.

Morning dress is the most formal clothing a man wears by day. It is the daytime counterpart of white tie, and in Britain it is still the dress code for formal weddings, the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot, the smartest enclosures on Derby day at Epsom and a handful of state and civic occasions. Most men wear it only a few times in their lives, often in hired clothes. The details that separate a correct outfit from a costume are few, and all of them are easy to learn.

What is morning dress?
Morning dress is a formal daytime dress code built around the morning coat, a single-breasted tailcoat whose fronts curve away from one button at the waist into tails that reach the back of the knee. It is worn with striped or checked gray trousers, a waistcoat, a white or pale shirt, a silk tie and black shoes, and often a top hat. It sits at the top of the ladder of men's dress codes beside white tie, its evening equivalent.
The name goes back to the nineteenth century, when gentlemen wore a cutaway coat for their morning ride, which is why the front is cut away. It began as a relaxed alternative to the frock coat, became steadily more formal through the Victorian era and, by the Edwardian period, had replaced the frock coat as standard formal daywear. That is why it keeps the tails of a nineteenth-century coat while everyday suits lost theirs.
In the United States the morning coat is sometimes called a cutaway, and it is now rare outside a few institutional traditions. The best known is the US Solicitor General, who traditionally wears one to argue before the Supreme Court.
Black coat or gray morning suit: which is more formal?
There are two classic versions. The first is a black morning coat worn with gray striped trousers and a waistcoat, usually in a contrasting color. The second is the gray morning suit, in which coat, waistcoat and trousers are cut from the same mid-gray or charcoal fabric. The black coat is the more formal of the two and the only correct choice for funerals, memorial services, court and civic dress. The gray suit is for celebrations: summer weddings and race meetings, especially Royal Ascot.
Black coat
With striped or checked trousers
- The most formal version
- Waistcoat in buff, dove gray, pale blue or black
- Correct at weddings, the races, funerals, memorials and state or civic events
- The best choice if you will own only one

- Slightly less formal
- Mid-gray or charcoal
- Popular at Royal Ascot and summer weddings
- Not for funerals, court or civic dress
Navy morning dress
A modern alternative
- Accepted in the Royal Enclosure since 2020
- Less traditional than black or gray
- Best kept to weddings and the races
- Top hat must still be black or gray at Ascot
What do you wear with a morning coat?
Each item has a traditional form. The table lists the correct choice for every piece and the common substitutes that give a hired or improvised outfit away.
| Item | Correct | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Coat | Black or gray; one button; peak lapels; curved fronts; tails to the back of the knee | A coat so loose that the tails swing apart; leaving it unbuttoned while standing |
| Trousers | Gray-and-black stripe or a small black-and-white check; high waist; braces | Belt loops and a belt; low-rise trousers that leave a gap below the waistcoat |
| Waistcoat | Buff, dove gray, pale blue or cream for celebrations; black or matching gray for the most formal events | Novelty prints; backless waistcoats; shiny satin evening waistcoats |
| Shirt | White, pale blue or pale pink; turndown collar; double cuffs | Button-down collars; dark or loudly patterned shirts |
| Neckwear | Silk tie, often silver or gray, in a four-in-hand or half Windsor knot | Cravats and bow ties where the code bans them, as at Royal Ascot |
| Hat | Black or gray top hat | Colored ribbons or bands in the Royal Enclosure |
| Shoes and socks | Polished black oxfords, plain or cap toe; dark socks that cover the ankle | Brown shoes, brogues, loafers; patent leather, which is for evening |
| Extras | Pocket square, boutonniere, gray gloves, a plain umbrella | A pocket square cut from the same silk as the tie |
The morning coat: cut, fabric and fit
A morning coat is single-breasted and usually fastens with one button, sometimes a link button (two buttons joined by a short link). The lapels are traditionally peaked, as on the evening tailcoat; notch lapels are acceptable but less formal, as our guide to peak vs notch lapels explains. Below the button, the fronts curve back in one smooth sweep to the tails, which fall to about the back of the knee. Two buttons sit at the back of the waist, where the tails begin.
Black coats are usually cut from a worsted with a fine herringbone weave, which gives depth without shine. The classic black coat is true black, not midnight blue. Gray coats come in mid-gray or charcoal, and in a morning suit the same fabric runs through the waistcoat and trousers.
Fit decides whether morning dress looks right. The button should sit at your natural waist, so the curve of the fronts starts in the right place and the waistcoat shows above it. The coat stays buttoned whenever you stand. The tails should hang straight and close together when you are still, and the sleeves should show about ¼ to ½ inch (6 to 13 mm) of shirt cuff. The trousers must rise high enough to disappear under the waistcoat, so no shirt shows between them.

Morning dress trousers: stripes, checks and braces
The traditional trousers are striped in gray and black, a pattern often called cashmere stripe even though the fabric is usually worsted wool. A small black-and-white check, such as houndstooth, is the main alternative. Prince of Wales check and windowpane are less formal choices that suit the races better than a church. With a gray morning suit, the trousers match the coat.
Have them cut to sit at the natural waist and wear them with braces, which hold the trousers up under the waistcoat without the bulk of a belt. A plain hem with a slight break is the classic finish; turn-ups (cuffs) are traditionally left off. Our guide to belt loops, side adjusters and braces explains the ways to hold trousers up.
Which waistcoat goes with morning dress?
The waistcoat is where morning dress allows personality. For weddings and race meetings, a contrasting waistcoat in buff, dove gray, pale blue or cream is classic, in wool or linen; pale yellow and soft pink linen are livelier summer choices. It can be single-breasted, with or without lapels, or double-breasted with lapels, which looks especially sharp in the open curve of the coat. For the most formal and somber occasions the waistcoat is black, and with a gray morning suit it usually matches the suit.
Avoid backless waistcoats, which show when the coat moves, and novelty prints. At Royal Ascot, waistcoats and ties may carry discreet patterns or patriotic designs such as a national flag, but novelty designs are not allowed. Our guide to how to wear a waistcoat covers fit, including why the waistcoat must cover the trouser waistband.

Which shirt and tie go with morning dress?
The shirt is white or pale, with sky blue and soft pink the safest colors. It has double (French) cuffs and a turndown collar firm enough to stand up under the coat; a white collar on a pale blue shirt is a traditional option. A starched detachable collar is the historically correct choice, but a collar-attached shirt is now normal.
The wing collar worn with a cravat, sometimes called an ascot, is common in hire shops, but traditional British etiquette treats it as wrong for weddings and morning dress, and Royal Ascot does not allow cravats in its formal enclosures. Wear a silk necktie instead. Silver and gray ties are the standard at royal and formal events; at a wedding, a discreet pattern or a color taken from the waistcoat works well. A four-in-hand or half Windsor knot sits better under a morning coat than a bulky full Windsor.
Do you have to wear a top hat with morning dress?
A top hat is required in the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot, expected at race meetings that ask for morning dress and worn at some civic ceremonies. At weddings it is optional. Many men leave it behind, and those who bring one carry it or take it off indoors, as with any hat. Gray top hats are traditional at weddings and the races; black is the more formal choice and suits every version of morning dress.
A top hat is sized by head circumference and should sit level, just above the ears, without being forced down. Most new hats are wool or fur felt; vintage silk hats are prized and expensive. Some hire companies include a hat in the package, while others charge about $40 to $65 (30 to 50 pounds) extra.

Shoes, socks and accessories
- Shoes: highly polished black oxfords with closed lacing, plain or cap toe, with no broguing. Patent leather belongs to evening dress. Our guide to shoes with a suit explains the difference between oxfords and derbies.
- Socks: dark gray or black, long enough to cover the ankle when you sit. Royal Ascot requires socks that cover the ankle in its formal enclosures.
- Pocket square: white linen or silk, or a color that complements the tie without copying it.
- Boutonniere: usual at weddings, where the groom's flower often differs from the rest of the party.
- Gloves and umbrella: gray gloves are traditional and usually carried; a plain black umbrella is wise for any English summer.
- Watch: a slim wristwatch, or a pocket watch on a chain across the waistcoat.
Royal Ascot dress code 2026: what men must wear
Royal Ascot 2026 runs from 16 to 20 June. The racecourse sets a separate dress code for each enclosure, and the Royal Enclosure is the only one where morning dress is required. The codes are checked at the entrances, and details can change from year to year, so read the official guidance before you travel.
| Enclosure | Men must wear | Not allowed |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Enclosure | Black, gray or navy morning dress with a waistcoat and tie; a black or gray top hat; black shoes; socks that cover the ankle | Cravats and bow ties; customized top hats; novelty waistcoats or ties |
| Queen Anne Enclosure | A matching two- or three-piece suit with full-length trousers, a collared shirt and a tie (morning dress is also accepted) | Bow ties, cravats and neckerchiefs; jeans and chinos; trainers of any style |
| Village Enclosure | A jacket (it need not match the trousers), full-length trousers, a collared shirt and a tie; bow ties and cravats are accepted | Jeans; trainers |
| Windsor Enclosure | No formal code; a jacket, collared shirt and full-length trousers are recommended | Fancy dress and clothing with slogans, logos or novelty prints |
Based on Royal Ascot's published guidance for the 2026 meeting. Check the racecourse's own pages before you go.
Navy morning dress has been accepted in the Royal Enclosure since 2020, alongside black and gray, but top hats must still be black or gray, and customizing them with colored ribbons or bands is not allowed. In the other enclosures a top hat is not required for men, and a smart suit and tie is the right choice for the Queen Anne Enclosure.
Who wears morning dress at a wedding?
At a formal British day wedding, the groom, best man, ushers and fathers of the couple traditionally wear morning dress, and the invitation may ask guests to do the same. If it says morning dress, male guests should wear it. If it says morning dress or lounge suit, a dark suit and tie is equally correct. A ceremony that starts after 6 pm calls for evening dress instead, never morning dress.
The wedding party usually shares one look so the photographs hang together, with the groom set apart by a different waistcoat, tie or flower. Guests should not copy the wedding party; a black coat with a quiet waistcoat is the safe guest choice. Our guides to wedding suits for grooms and wedding guest attire cover the other dress codes.
How much does morning dress cost to hire, buy or commission?

$200–335
Buy ready-made
About 400 to 600 pounds

$1,100–2,700
Bespoke, London
About 2,300 to 7,000 pounds, or more at some houses
$3,100–9,400
Hire for one or two events. A hire package of coat, trousers and waistcoat, usually with a shirt and tie, costs about $200 to $335 (150 to 250 pounds) in 2026, with shoes and sometimes the hat extra. Book early for June, because Royal Ascot and the peak wedding season fall in the same weeks. Try everything on at a fitting and ask for the trousers to be let out or taken in if the waistband sits low.
Buy once you expect to wear morning dress three or more times; by then the hire fees add up to the price of a ready-made outfit. A black coat with striped trousers is the most useful single purchase, because it covers weddings, the races and somber occasions. Add a second waistcoat for variety rather than a second coat.
Commission if you go to the races every year, belong to a family that marries in morning dress, or are hard to fit. A morning coat is a demanding garment: the sweep of the fronts and the hang of the tails depend on the cutter, and hired coats rarely sit close at the shoulders and waist. Because the style barely changes, a well-made coat lasts for decades. Entry-level London bespoke starts at about $3,100 (2,300 pounds) for a morning suit, and traditional Savile Row houses charge about $9,400 (7,000 pounds) or more. Our ranking of London's best tailors lists the houses we rate.
What to check at a morning dress fitting
- The coat button sits at your natural waist and the coat closes without pulling.
- The fronts curve away cleanly from the button, with no flare or gape.
- The tails hang straight and meet at the back of the knee or just above it.
- The sleeves show about ¼ to ½ inch (6 to 13 mm) of shirt cuff.
- The waistcoat covers the trouser waistband with no shirt showing, even when you raise your arms.
- The trousers sit at the natural waist on braces and have a plain hem with a slight break.
- The shirt collar stands clear of the coat collar at the back of the neck.
Get these points right, choose a waistcoat that suits the day, polish the shoes and tie a neat knot. Morning dress rewards precision more than expense, and a hired outfit that fits well looks better than an expensive one that does not.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between morning dress and a morning suit?
Morning dress is the dress code: a morning coat with tails, a waistcoat, formal trousers, a shirt and tie, and usually a top hat. A morning suit is one version of it, in which the coat, waistcoat and trousers are cut from the same gray fabric. The black coat worn with striped trousers is the more formal version.
Can you wear morning dress in the evening?
No. Morning dress is formal daywear, and British etiquette says it should not be specified for events that start after 6 pm. For a formal evening event the equivalents are white tie or black tie. A wedding that starts in the day and runs into the evening keeps the morning dress worn at the ceremony.
Do guests wear morning dress at a British wedding?
Guests wear morning dress when the invitation asks for it. If the invitation says morning dress or lounge suit, a dark suit and tie is equally correct. Guests should not copy the wedding party's waistcoats or flowers, and a black coat with a quiet waistcoat is the safe choice.
Can you wear a navy morning suit to Royal Ascot?
Yes. Royal Ascot has accepted navy morning dress in the Royal Enclosure since 2020, alongside black and gray. It must still be worn with a waistcoat, a tie, a black or gray top hat, black shoes and socks that cover the ankle.
Do men have to wear a top hat at Royal Ascot?
Men must wear a black or gray top hat in the Royal Enclosure, and keep it on outdoors. It may be removed only inside a restaurant, a private box or a private club, or in an enclosed outdoor seating area, terrace, balcony or garden. Top hats are not required for men in the Queen Anne, Village or Windsor enclosures.
Can you wear a cravat with morning dress?
A cravat is common with hired morning suits, but traditional etiquette treats it as wrong for weddings and morning dress. Royal Ascot bans cravats and bow ties in the Royal Enclosure and the Queen Anne Enclosure. A silk necktie with a turndown collar is always correct.
How much does it cost to hire morning dress?
Hiring morning dress in the UK costs about $200 to $335 (150 to 250 pounds) in 2026 for the coat, trousers and waistcoat, usually with a shirt and tie. Shoes are usually extra, and some companies charge about $40 to $65 (30 to 50 pounds) for a top hat. Group bookings for wedding parties often get a discount.
What shoes do you wear with morning dress?
Wear highly polished black oxfords with closed lacing, in a plain or cap-toe style with no broguing. Patent leather is for evening dress, and brown shoes, brogues and loafers are wrong with morning dress. Royal Ascot requires black shoes in its Royal Enclosure.
