The 96th Academy Awards were held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday 10 March 2024. On the red carpet, most male nominees and guests wore black tie from the large fashion houses, with a handful of looks that changed the cut or color of the standard dinner suit, according to reports from TIME, InsideHook, Esquire Singapore and Man's World India.

The nominees

Cillian Murphy, who won best actor for Oppenheimer, wore Atelier Versace; InsideHook described the look as a classic tuxedo, and Man's World noted a brooch on the lapel. Colman Domingo, nominated for best actor for Rustin, wore a custom Louis Vuitton tuxedo. TIME described it as having wide legs, and Esquire Singapore described a double-breasted jacket with flared trousers and embellished buttons, worn with Louis Vuitton cowboy boots.

Ryan Gosling wore Gucci, and Bradley Cooper wore custom Louis Vuitton. Sterling K. Brown wore Dior Men, Yorgos Lanthimos and Willem Dafoe wore Prada, and Jeffrey Wright wore an Armani tuxedo, according to InsideHook. Paul Giamatti and Dwayne Johnson wore Dolce & Gabbana.

Who dressed the men

Across the red carpet roundups, the same handful of houses appeared again and again. Designers named for men's looks included:

  • Zegna: Ramy Youssef, David Oyelowo and Jon Batiste.
  • Prada: Yorgos Lanthimos, Willem Dafoe, Roger Federer and Taylor Zakhar Perez, who wore powder blue.
  • Gucci: Ryan Gosling, Jesse Plemons, Kingsley Ben-Adir and Mark Ronson.
  • Louis Vuitton: Colman Domingo, Bradley Cooper and Teo Yoo.
  • Atelier Versace: Cillian Murphy, Matthew McConaughey and Dwyane Wade.
  • Giorgio Armani and Armani: Ke Huy Quan and Jeffrey Wright.
  • Others: Brunello Cucinelli (Matt Bomer), Berluti (Josh Hartnett), Brioni (John Krasinski), Tom Ford (Dominic Sessa), Marni (Riz Ahmed) and Fendi (John Mulaney).

Man's World India singled out a velvet double-breasted jacket worn by Jonathan Bailey, and noted brooches on the lapels of several men, including Murphy and Krasinski.

Esquire Singapore described Riz Ahmed's Marni suit as finished with raw edges and few flourishes. Glen Powell wore Tom Ford, and Matt Bomer a custom Brunello Cucinelli look with a TAG Heuer watch, according to Man's World India. Several men paired their tailoring with jewelry houses: Robert Downey Jr. wore Saint Laurent with Tiffany & Co., Jack Quaid wore Ralph Lauren with Tiffany & Co., and Teo Yoo wore Louis Vuitton with Cartier, Esquire Singapore reported.

What it means for tailoring

The 2024 Oscars carpet showed how firmly the Academy Awards remain a black tie event for men. The departures were in details: Domingo's flared trousers and double-breasted closure, Perez's powder blue, Bailey's velvet. For anyone buying a dinner suit, those are the same choices on offer from a good tailor, from a double-breasted or single-breasted front to a velvet jacket or a midnight or colored fabric.

The roundups also show how much of Hollywood's formalwear comes from Italian houses, with Zegna, Prada, Gucci, Versace, Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Brunello Cucinelli and Brioni all represented on the night.
