Founded in 1969, Peninsula Bespoke Tailor is one of Bangkok's leading names in bespoke tailoring, with more than five decades of experience. The business is now run by the second generation, led by Mr. Tony Ram, and over the years it has built a loyal clientele of diplomats, executives, expatriates and travelers from around the world.
Its history goes back to the 1950s, when its founder, Mr. Ram, left Nepal for Hong Kong and worked at a bespoke tailor there. He then moved to Bangkok in 1967 to work as a master tailor, and in 1969 he opened his own business on Charoen Krung, one of the city's oldest streets. In 1987 the business moved to Peninsula Plaza Bangkok, and an expansion in 2003 made it one of the largest tailors in Thailand. When the plaza closed down in 2022, the business moved to its current location on Silom Road.
Today, the business makes a full range of bespoke clothing for men and women. Bespoke suits remain at the heart of the work, alongside shirts, jackets, trousers, tuxedos, overcoats and wedding attire, covering everything from casual to formal wear. It also makes custom shoes and belts from a wide choice of leathers, something few tailors in Bangkok offer. With a team of more than 30 in-house tailors, it can work across many styles, from structured classic British and the softer shape of an Italian cut to modern slim and classic American. The fabric selection runs from wool, cashmere and linen to cotton, silk and a wide choice of blends, along with a large range of buttons, linings and trims, so even the smallest details can be customized.
Each order follows the traditional bespoke process. It begins with a consultation, where the client explains what they are looking for and how they want it to look, then chooses the fabric and details with the tailor's help. Detailed 30-point measurements come next, along with notes on posture and proportions, and these are kept on file so that future orders can be made to the same fit. A pattern is then drafted for that client alone, and the garment is built around a horsehair canvas, the traditional inner structure of a bespoke jacket, which helps it hold its shape and move naturally with the body. At the fitting, held in store or at the client's hotel, the unfinished garment is tried on and adjusted until the fit is right. Most orders are ready in two to three days, and 24-hour express tailoring is available for those short on time.
Prices start at about $250 for a two-piece bespoke suit and rise with finer fabrics and added details. Clients are offered a complimentary private chauffeur, who collects them from their hotel anywhere in Bangkok and takes them back, and finished garments can be collected in store, delivered to a hotel or shipped worldwide. The team also holds trunk shows in Europe, the United States and Australia for clients who live abroad. For anyone having a suit made in Bangkok, whether for business, a wedding or everyday wear, it is a strong option.
