In this guide

New York is one of the largest made-to-measure markets in the world. You can order a suit to your measurements in a downtown showroom for well under $1,000, in a Midtown custom shop for a few thousand, or on Madison Avenue from a house whose ready-to-wear costs more. The process is similar everywhere. The price, the make and the number of fittings are not, and the words on the window rarely tell you which you are getting.

What is a made-to-measure suit?

Made-to-measure suit

A suit made from an existing house pattern, called a block, that is adjusted to your measurements, posture and style choices, then sewn in a workshop or factory. It sits between ready-to-wear, made in standard sizes, and bespoke, where a cutter drafts a new pattern for you alone.

The adjustment can be small or large. A basic program changes lengths and widths from a size you try on. A good one also corrects posture, such as a dropped shoulder or a forward neck, and lets you choose the fabric, lapel, pockets, lining and trouser details. Our guide to bespoke vs made-to-measure explains the tiers in detail.

Who sells made-to-measure suits in New York?

Four kinds of business sell made-to-measure in the city. They differ in where the suit is made, how much hand work goes in and how many fittings you get.

Custom shops and studios

Custom shops, many in Midtown, take your measurements in a studio and send the order to a workshop. Michael Andrews, with studios in NoHo and on East 53rd Street, shows the range one firm can offer: made-to-measure from $995 on an adjusted pattern with a floating half canvas, and full bespoke from $2,995 with a full canvas. A September 2026 survey of Manhattan custom tailors found many working in two or three visits over four to eight weeks.

Brand programs

Menswear brands sell made-to-measure in their stores. Brooks Brothers offers it at its flagship at 195 Broadway, with a limited selection of fabrics, Todd Snyder has an in-house made-to-measure service and tailor at 1165 Madison Avenue, and Thom Sweeney's Madison Avenue flagship, opened in June 2026, sells made-to-measure alongside bespoke and ready-to-wear.

Premium houses

Alan Flusser Custom adjusts house blocks for each client and offers three makes: Club from $2,700, largely machine-sewn with hand finishing; Gentry from $3,300, largely handmade at a partner workshop outside the US; and Heritage from $4,600, made by hand in New York. The Armoury sells made-to-measure made by Ring Jacket in Japan and, in its Hundred Series, in Italy, from $3,150 and $3,600 in 2024.

Custom makers that sit near bespoke

Some New York makers cut an individual pattern but fit only once or twice. Martin Greenfield Clothiers in Brooklyn makes each custom suit by hand from an individual pattern with a full canvas, with one fitting four to five weeks after measuring and delivery about ten days later. J. Mueser's Waverly line is cut from a hand-drafted pattern and made in Naples in six to eight weeks, with two to three fittings.

How do made-to-measure fittings work?

A typical New York made-to-measure order

  1. 1

    Consultation and fabric

You talk through how you will wear the suit and choose the fabric, lining and details. A first visit can take up to 90 minutes; Michael Andrews allows about that long.

  2. 2

    Measurements and try-on

The fitter measures you and, at many shops, puts you in a sample jacket and trousers in your nearest size, then pins and notes the changes. This try-on is where most of the fit is decided.

Tip: Wear the shirt and shoes you will wear with the suit, and bring a jacket that fits you well.

  3. 3

    Production

The adjusted pattern goes to the workshop or factory, in New York or abroad. Most suits take about three to eight weeks.

  4. 4

    Fitting

You try on the finished or nearly finished suit. The fitter pins sleeves, hems and waist and checks the collar and shoulders.

  5. 5

    Alterations and collection

Final changes are made, usually within a week or two, and you collect the suit. Ask how long free alterations last after that.

Premium programs add a stage in the middle. Alan Flusser Custom holds a first fitting about six to eight weeks after the order, then a final fitting, and its Heritage make can start with a muslin fitting, which pushes the first fitting to about 11 to 12 weeks.

  1. Stage 1: Consultation

    Day 0

Fabric, style, measurements and try-on garments

  2. Stage 2: Production

    Weeks 1 to 6

Adjusted pattern cut and sewn in a workshop or factory

  3. Stage 3: Fitting

    About weeks 3 to 8

Finished or nearly finished suit pinned for final changes

  4. Stage 4: Collection

About 1 to 2 weeks after the fitting

Alterations done; free alteration window begins

A typical made-to-measure timeline: the try-on at the first visit decides most of the fit, and the fitting near the end fine-tunes it.

Made-to-measure vs bespoke in New York: what is the difference?

The difference is the pattern. Made-to-measure adjusts a house block; bespoke starts from a blank sheet and is corrected on your body over basted fittings. In New York the words custom, made-to-measure and bespoke are used loosely, so ask who makes the pattern and whether you will try on a basted garment.

Made-to-measure suits most people with a regular figure well. Bespoke earns its price when your posture or proportions need correction that no block can supply. How long does a made-to-measure suit take in New York?

Most made-to-measure suits in New York take about three to eight weeks. Michael Andrews quotes six to eight weeks and offers a four-week rush; Martin Greenfield takes about six weeks. Premium makes can take longer: The Armoury's made-to-measure took about three months for most ranges in 2024, and 8 to 10 weeks for the Hundred Series.

What should you ask before ordering a made-to-measure suit?

Questions to ask any New York custom shop

  • Is my pattern adjusted from a house block, or drafted for me?
  • Where is the suit sewn: in New York, elsewhere in the US or abroad?
  • Is the chest fused, half canvas or full canvas?
  • How many fittings are included, and when?
  • What happens if it does not fit: free alterations, a remake, or neither?
  • How long do free alterations last after delivery?
  • Which fabric books are included at the starting price?
  • Does the quote include 8.875% sales tax?
  • Will you keep my pattern or measurements for the next order?

Alterations policies show why the questions matter. Michael Andrews, for example, gives made-to-measure garments one free round of alterations within two weeks of delivery, against three months for bespoke. Ask before you pay a deposit, not at the fitting.

Questions people ask

How much is a made-to-measure suit in NYC?

A made-to-measure suit in New York City costs about $800 to $2,500 at most custom shops in 2026, from about $400 at entry level and about $2,700 to $4,600 or more at premium houses. New York sales tax of 8.875% is usually added on top. The fabric changes the final price more than anything else.

How long does a made-to-measure suit take in New York?

Most made-to-measure suits in New York take about three to eight weeks from the first appointment to collection. Some premium makes take longer: The Armoury's made-to-measure took about three months for most ranges in 2024. Order about three months ahead for a wedding.

Is made-to-measure the same as bespoke?

No. A made-to-measure suit is cut from an existing house pattern adjusted to your measurements, usually with one or two fittings. A bespoke suit is cut from a paper pattern drafted for you alone and refined over two to four fittings, starting with a basted garment. In New York both are often called custom, so ask how the pattern is made.

Do you pay sales tax on a made-to-measure suit in New York?

Yes. New York City charges 8.875% sales tax on clothing items costing $110 or more, which covers any made-to-measure suit. On a $2,000 suit the tax is about $180. Most shops quote prices before tax, so ask for the total.

How many fittings does a made-to-measure suit need?

A made-to-measure suit usually needs one or two fittings: a try-on and measuring session at the first visit, then a fitting on the finished or nearly finished suit. Premium programs may add a fitting in the middle; Alan Flusser Custom, for example, holds a first and a final fitting. Bespoke needs more.

Is made-to-measure better than buying a suit off the rack and having it altered?

Made-to-measure is better if ready-to-wear jackets do not fit your shoulders or chest, because alterations cannot fix those. If you are close to a standard size, a good ready-to-wear suit with alterations at about $80 to $200 can match entry made-to-measure for less money. Buy for the shoulders, then alter the rest.

Where can you get a made-to-measure suit in Manhattan?

Many custom shops are in Midtown Manhattan, including East 48th and East 53rd Streets, and brand programs run on Madison Avenue and at Brooks Brothers' flagship at 195 Broadway. Downtown, Michael Andrews has a studio in NoHo and The Armoury a shop in Tribeca. Book an appointment before you go.
