Shipping a Tailored Suit Home From Thailand: Customs, Duties and Reorders

The short answer

The cheapest way to bring a Bangkok suit home is to carry it, because it can count toward your traveler's duty-free allowance. A shipped suit gets no allowance. In 2026 the US charges duty on every shipment, since its $800 low-value exemption ended in August 2025. The UK and EU add VAT to every parcel and full duty above set limits, and Australia charges nothing below 1,000 Australian dollars.

  • Carry your suit if you can: it counts toward your traveler's duty-free allowance.
  • The US has charged duty on every shipment since August 29, 2025, whatever the value.
  • A wool suit shipped to the US pays 17.5% duty, plus a 12.5% extra tariff on most Thai goods since July 24, 2026.
  • The UK and EU charge full duty above about $170 to $180, with import VAT on top; Australia charges nothing at the border up to about $700.
  • Keep your measurements, fabric codes and style notes so you can reorder by message.
In this guide

Many suits made in Bangkok fly home in their owner's cabin bag. Others travel by courier, because the order was large, the trip was short or the suit was reordered from abroad. How you bring it home changes what you pay at customs, and the rules changed sharply in 2025 and 2026, above all for the United States. This guide sets out the options and the current rules for the US, the UK, the EU and Australia.

Should you carry your suit home or ship it?

Carry it if you can. A suit in your luggage counts toward the duty-free allowance that most countries give returning travelers, it arrives when you do, and nothing can go astray in transit. Ship it when you have ordered more than your bags can hold, when you leave before the suit is finished, or when you reorder from home.

Carry it

Most trips

  • Counts toward your duty-free traveler allowance
  • Arrives with you, ready to wear
  • Ask the tailor to fold it with tissue and add a garment bag
  • Declare it if you go over the allowance

Express courier

DHL, FedEx or UPS

  • Usually a few working days, door to door
  • Full tracking
  • The courier clears customs and bills duty, tax and a fee
  • Costs more than the post

Postal EMS

Thailand Post

  • Usually cheaper than a courier, often slower
  • Your national post office collects duty and a handling fee
  • Check the current service to your country before sending
  • Tracking varies by country
Carrying is cheapest because of your traveler allowance; a courier is the fastest way to ship, and the post is usually the cheapest.

Ask the tailor to pack the suit for travel: folded with tissue paper in each fold and placed in a garment bag that goes in the cabin with you. Our guide to packing a suit shows the fold and how to unpack it without creases.

How do import duties work on a tailored suit?

Customs duty is a percentage of the value of the goods, set by what they are and where they were made. Many countries add a sales tax such as VAT or GST on top, and a courier or post office usually adds a fee for clearing the parcel. A suit made in Thailand is a Thai-made garment, so it pays the rate for Thai goods, whatever fabric mill wove the fabric.

Every shipment needs a clear invoice. Ask the tailor to list each garment, its fiber content, the price you paid and Thailand as the country of origin. Declaring the true price keeps clearance quick and your record clean.

How much duty will you pay on a suit shipped to the US?

The US used to let shipments worth $800 or less in without duty, under a rule known as Section 321. It ended that for China and Hong Kong on May 2, 2025, and for all countries on August 29, 2025. The suspension continues in 2026, a February 2026 Supreme Court ruling on tariffs did not bring it back, and Congress has written the end of the exemption into law from July 1, 2027. A suit shipped from Bangkok now pays duty whatever it costs.

The regular US duty on a man's wool suit is 17.5%. On July 24, 2026, an extra 12.5% tariff took effect on most goods from Thailand, on top of the regular duty. It replaced a 10% surcharge that applied from February 24 to July 23, 2026. If both apply, a $300 suit pays about $90, plus the carrier's clearance fee. Shirts, trousers and other garments have their own rates, and these rates have changed several times since 2025.

What will you pay in the UK, EU and Australia?

United Kingdom

Carried home, a suit counts toward your 390-pound allowance for other goods (about $520). If your goods total more, you pay duty and VAT on the full value, not just the excess. For clothing, the duty is a flat 2.5% when your goods are worth up to 630 pounds (about $840) and 12% above that, plus 20% VAT on the value and the duty.

Shipped, a parcel worth 135 pounds (about $180) or less pays no customs duty. Above that, a suit pays 12% duty and 20% VAT, calculated on the value including postage, packaging and insurance, and the carrier collects them, usually with a fee, before delivery. The UK has said the 135-pound duty relief will end by October 2028 at the latest.

European Union

Air and sea travelers can bring in 430 euros of goods (about $480) duty and tax free. Above that, you can usually pay a flat 2.5% duty on goods worth up to 700 euros (about $780), or the normal tariff rate, which is 12% for a suit, plus VAT at your country's rate.

Shipped, every parcel pays import VAT. Since July 1, 2026, parcels worth 150 euros or less pay a flat duty of 3 euros per item instead of the normal rate, a temporary rule due to run until July 1, 2028. Above 150 euros, which covers almost any suit, the normal 12% duty applies, plus VAT.

Australia

Each adult can bring in 900 Australian dollars of general goods (about $630) duty free, and 450 for under-18s. Families traveling together can combine their allowances if they clear customs together. Go over, and duty and tax apply to all goods in that category, not just the excess.

Shipped, goods worth 1,000 Australian dollars (about $700) or less pay no duty or GST at the border. GST is charged at the point of sale only if the seller is registered for Australian GST. Above 1,000 Australian dollars, you pay duty and 10% GST at the border, plus a processing charge. Goods made in Thailand can qualify for duty-free entry under the Thailand-Australia Free Trade Agreement, so ask the tailor whether it can supply proof of origin.

How do you ship a suit from Bangkok?

Most tailors on our Bangkok ranking can ship a finished suit to you abroad and will arrange the courier for you. Agree the method, the cost and who pays the import charges before you leave.

Shipping a suit, step by step

  1. 1

Ask the tailor to arrange it

Tailors ship often and know which services work best to your country. Ask for the shipping cost on your written quote.

  2. 2

    Choose courier or post

A courier is faster and clears customs for you; the post is usually cheaper. For a suit you need by a date, choose a courier.

  3. 3

    Get a full invoice

Each garment, its fiber content, the price paid and Thailand as the country of origin. Keep a copy yourself.

  4. 4

Agree who pays the import charges

Usually you pay on delivery. Some couriers let the sender prepay duty and tax; ask whether that is possible and what it costs.

  5. 5

Insure it for the full value

A bespoke suit is hard to replace. Ask for insurance that covers the price you paid.

Tip: Ask the tailor to send you the tracking number and a photo of the packed suit.

Before the parcel leaves

  • Your full address and a phone number customs can reach.
  • An itemized invoice naming each garment, its fiber and its price.
  • The true price paid as the declared value.
  • Thailand as the country of origin.
  • The suit folded with tissue, in a garment bag, in a strong box.
  • Insurance for the full value and a tracking number.

Tissue in each fold keeps a new suit from creasing in transit, whether it travels in your bag or in a box.

How do you keep your measurements on file?

Your tailor keeps your paper pattern, which is the real record of your fit. Keep your own notes as well, so a reorder starts from facts rather than memory. A tailor can then cut new garments from the same pattern and adjust it if your shape has changed.

  • The tailor's name and your order reference, so they can find your pattern quickly.
  • Your measurements, if the tailor will share them, with the date taken.
  • Fabric codes for each suit and shirt, with photos of the swatches.
  • Style details: lapel width, buttons, vents, pockets, trouser front, cuffs and collar style.
  • Fit notes from your fittings, such as a slightly longer sleeve or a looser collar.
  • Photos of the finished suit on you, front, side and back.

How do you reorder a suit or shirts online?

Reordering by message works well once a tailor has a corrected pattern. Shirts and trousers are the easiest garments to reorder, because small changes are simple to describe. For a new jacket style, or after a change in weight, a fitting is worth waiting for. Peninsula Bespoke Tailor holds trunk shows in Europe, the United States and Australia, and Narry Bespoke Tailors in the US, Europe and Asia, so returning clients of Peninsula Bespoke Tailor and Narry Bespoke Tailors can be fitted closer to home.
