Leonard Logsdail offers what few New York tailors still do: the person who measures you also drafts the pattern and cuts the fabric. In his own words, true bespoke is when your garment is cut by the person who measures you. The jacket, trousers and buttonholes are then made by specialist tailors in New York, a common arrangement in the city, and Logsdail fits the suit himself. He tells new clients to allow at least three months.

His training is pure London. He left school at 15, spent three years at tailoring school, worked for Savile Row firms including Bernard Weatherill and Welsh & Jeffries, and opened his own business on Carnaby Street at 21, in 1971. He later moved to Savile Row and built a following across Europe before moving the business to Midtown in 1991. The cut is drapey with a slightly extended shoulder but fits more closely than Anderson & Sheppard, and Logsdail says balance is the most important part of any suit.

Film work has made his name. Permanent Style called him probably the best-known bespoke tailor in New York in 2019, and since The Good Shepherd in 2006 he has made suits for Robert De Niro, Denzel Washington, Michael Douglas, Al Pacino and Tom Hanks, and for productions from American Gangster to The Irishman and HBO's Succession.

Prices are not published, and this is not an inexpensive choice: he has said the fabric alone for a two-piece suit costs about $1,800 to $1,900. Choose Logsdail for a classic English suit cut and fitted in Manhattan by its maker. Paolo Martorano offers a softer, more service-led alternative, and Martin Greenfield costs far less. Logsdail was born in 1950; his son, Leonard Jr., has worked with him since 2012.
