Paolo Martorano is the most notable newcomer to New York bespoke of the past decade. He grew up in Bellmore on Long Island, interned with Alan Flusser as a teenager and spent seven years in the custom department at Paul Stuart under Mark Rykken, before managing bespoke and made-to-measure in North America for Dunhill. He opened his own business in 2017, at 25, and works from a showroom at 130 West 57th Street, near Carnegie Hall.

He leads the design and fittings rather than cutting. Each suit is cut by a dedicated cutter, who spent most of his career with Raphael Raffaelli and also worked for Bill Fioravanti, and made by coatmakers outside the showroom. Construction is traditional: a paper pattern, basted fittings, hand-padded collars and chests, hand-sewn taping and linings felled by hand. The first fitting is often in fabric only, without canvas. Reviewing a jacket in 2023, Permanent Style judged its fit and finish very good, on a par with many English tailors.

Martorano calls the style New York Refined: a soft, lightly padded, sloped shoulder, a high, close collar, a little drape in the chest and a close back, worn with high-rise, double-pleated trousers. Clients range from their thirties to their eighties and include the actors Brian Cox and George Hamilton and the guitarist John Pizzarelli. He delivers the first try-on in person.

Suits start at $7,500 and jackets at $5,200 (2023 figures), at the upper end of New York bespoke and well above Martin Greenfield's custom suits. Choose Martorano for attentive service and a soft, classic cut. Choose Leonard Logsdail if you want the person who measures you to cut the pattern too.
