How tailoring works in Bangkok
The city's tailoring trade grew in the 1960s and 1970s. Tailoring families from India and Nepal first opened for American servicemen near the air bases of the northeast, then moved to the capital, and many of those families are still in the trade today, now in their second or third generation.
Most Bangkok tailors work the same way. A first visit covers the fabric, the style and the measurements, and the suit is cut from a pattern made for the client. One or two fittings follow, often a day apart, and the finished suit is ready in two to four days. Many tailors collect clients from their hotel, and several can make a suit in 24 hours.
The choice of fabric is wide. Most tailors carry standard blended fabrics alongside 100% wool, cashmere blends, linen and silk from Italy and England, so the same suit can be made for very different budgets. Because tailoring costs less here, a suit in Bangkok usually costs far less than the same fabric would abroad.
